"Shit.." Chase murmurs, his gaze locked on the distant trees. "Ryan's coming...and he's not alone."
"Yeah, I know." I reply, trying to stop my voice from shaking. Now my eyes start phasing. "Please tell me you have a plan in mind."
He doesn't respond as he looks around; his human ears replaced by fur and his wolf ones appearing on his head, along with his tail. He's scared. I can tell because he's shifting his feet slightly and his ears are flicking in a manner that suggests uncertainty. It's clear he doesn't have a plan.
"They're two miles away. They'll be here within about five minutes if they are running." I report, dragging my gaze from the direction of Ryan's pack's scent and looking up into Chase's face; trying to get him to focus. "We need to get out of here before then or find somewhere to hide."
I look over my right shoulder, then back at him. "We should head back to the cabin - you have a phone there don't you?" I ask, praying internally that he does.
He nods.
"Good." I reply. "Maybe you can call your family - they are trespassing on your territory after all."
Chase nods again, dragging his gaze away from the trees. "Yeah, okay. But what about your backpack? If Ryan is coming after you, leaving it there would only confirm that you're here. Plus, your knife is still in there."
"Forget it." I reply. "He probably already knows where I am. The backpack still smells of mint so they shouldn't suspect anything out of the ordinary - they're not smart enough to look for an old bag."
"All right, c'mon." He answers, turning around to use his other shoulder to support me as I limp to face the direction we just came from. We haven't even gotten halfway when -
"Well, well, well. You really are pathetic."
We both freeze; knowing exactly who it is.
Chase looks over his shoulder, then turns back to face me with a small growl. I tilt my head slightly and he nods his in return. It's Ryan. His voice is distant, which suggests that he's standing somewhere close to the trees - and I can smell his whole pack is with him.
"Go, get out of here. I'll distract them." Chase whispers, unhooking my arm from his shoulder and gently pushing me towards the way we came. "I'll catch up, I promise." He adds as I grab his arm to stop him from turning around. I, reluctantly, let go of him and he turns to face Ryan by himself.
"What do you want, Ryan?" He asks as he turns around, trying to block me from view while I start to limp my way as fast as I can back across the bridge.
I don't get very far before I hear Ryan laugh slightly as he comes closer to the bridge and I can hear the footsteps of his pack behind him. There's a click and I look over my shoulder to make sure Chase isn't getting set upon again. I won't let him take a second beating, not for my sake. But, instead, it's a whole lot worse. Five of Ryan's pack members are making their way over the river to cut me off. One of them catches me looking and leaps up onto the side of the bridge, easily climbing over a bit of the old railing to stand in front of me with a smirk. Before I can react or back away, he lifts his hand with his claws out to slash me across the face with them - just like I did to Chase in the music room.
Like a panther, Chase appears out of nowhere and grabs the guy's wrist before it even gets close to my head and deflects it away from me. The guy immediately tries to lunge at him but Chase is quick to grab him and throw him back over the railing so that he plummets into the water below. Chase looks over his shoulder in a questioning way and I give a soft nod.
"Nice try, Blindspot - but you're not getting away that easy." snarls Ryan from somewhere behind me. I turn to face him. He's standing at the end of the bridge with four others. My heartbeat continues to increase and my vision completely phases to red. No no no no. I think to myself as my body begins to shake and my fear-scent increases. Chase moves so that his back is facing my front - just like back in school when he stuck up for me.
