"Riker" she whispered against my ear.
"Yeah?" I asked, rubbing my eyes.
"I hear something."
"What do you hear?"
"Footsteps."

I listened carefully, and then a twig snapped. The noise was eerily familiar, draining all of the color from my cheeks. Her arms tightened around me and I pulled her in tightly. Neither of us dared to breathe.
When the footsteps started to fade, we gathered our things and plotted an escape.

"What happens if they hear us or see us?" She asked.
"Keep running. Don't stop. If your legs start burning, ignore it. Just get to some where safe."
"What about you? What if you fall or they catch up to you? What do I do?"
"You keep going, Cassie. Don't stop for me. The goal is that you'll live to tell the story. If something happens to me, tell my family that I love them, okay? And remember for yourself that I love you."
"Riker, please. Don't do this. I'm not going to keep going. I can't."
"Do it, Cassie. For me."
"Did you say that you loved me?" She asked.
"Yeah." I whispered.
"Like as a friend, right?"
"No, Cassie. I'm in love with you. I have been for a long time, but you were happy in your relationship and I wanted you to have that. But I'm in love with everything about you. That's why you need to be safe, okay?"
Tears brimmed in her eyes as she lifted her hand to my face. She pulled me closer and smashed her lips upon mine. Every moment I had ever spent had nothing on this. I could feel every emotion she had experienced for the past month just through her lips. She pulled away from me and looked longingly into my eyes.
"I love you, Riker. And I've felt an attraction towards you for so long, but I never wanted to say it. You've gotta get out of here with me." She pleaded.
And so we ran.

The twigs sliced our faces and arms as we ran, a repeat of the first time. We kept a steady pace, but had absolutely no sense of direction.
I looked behind me for one second and spotted the man behind us.
"CASSIE. RUN. FASTER. NOW." I screamed.
He was closing his distance between us quickly and it was only a matter of time.
I stopped and let Cassie go on. He kept coming at me full force, and when he crashed into me, I blacked out.
