Clem's Pov:

It was just another day of first grade and me and Violet were coloring as we waited to be picked up from school. I had met her just the other day on the playground at school between the tires and the swings. And now we were best friends.

I looked down at the kitty cat I was drawing and figured he could use some stripes. So I grabbed the orange and started coloring him in.

Once I was done I lifted up the paper and showed the picture to Violet. "Look I made a cat!"

Violet looked up from her drawing and smiled. "Cool. That's really pretty Clem." Then she glanced down at the table. "Can I have the orange, please?"

"Sure." I said and Violet reached out to take it from me. But I heard her whimper as she did. It looked like she had tears in her eyes as she held out her hand. As I passed the crayon to her I saw her sleeve slide down her arm and a dark mark was shown on her skin.

I gasped and dropped the crayon. "What's that?" And I pointed at the mark on her arm.

"Nothing!" Violet quickly said as she yanked her sleeve down.

"Violet are you okays?" I asked.

She nodded without saying anything.

"But you have a boo boo on your arm." I asked confused. "I'll get Mrs. Randall." I said happily hoping to be helping out a friend.

"No don't!" Violet said grabbing my arm. She winced again.

"Why not?" I asked, wanting to know why Violet didn't want help. If she was hurt she should get help.

"I's fine." She said.

I didn't know how much I really believed that. And I gave her a look. Luckily Mrs. Randall came over to check on us. "How's it going girls?"

I was about to tell her about Violet's arm, but the blonde cut me off. "We's good Mrs. Randall."

The teacher nodded her approval and left. So I leaned in and whispered. "Why don't you wants help?

She leaned in close and whispered, "Because daddy will hur...."

"Violet!" A loud voice sounded from the doorway.

We looked over and saw her father standing in the doorway. "Oh you're daddy's here." I told her. But I looked over and saw fear in her eyes.

"Come here now." Her daddy said strictly and pointed at the ground.

Violet grabbed her backpack and whispered goodbye to me. Then she walked over to her father with her drawing and her head bowed low. But when she showed him the drawing he snatched it from her and crumpled it up. Then he grabbed her arm and yanked her out of the classroom.

I was about to walk after her but a new figure appeared and stopped me. "Daddy!"

I ran up and gave him a hug. "Hey sweet pea." He said to me. "Why don't you grab your backpack so we can go home."

I ran to grab my backpack and my drawing and walked back to my dad. I showed him my picture and he said it was a very nice drawing.

He picked me up and we walked out to the car. Lee opened the car door to his truck and he placed me in my booster seat, setting my backpack next to me. Then he closed the door and hopped in the front seat.

I looked out the window and as we pulled away I got a glimpse of Violet and her dad. And what I saw made me scared. I saw her daddy swing and knock her to the ground.
