We spent our morning decorating the house. Eliza was buzzing with excitement and I got swept up in it. We cranked Christmas music and decided we needed some hot chocolate.

"Mama, I want to see snow one day. It looks so magical," she said while sipping.

"I went to Pennsylvania once. There was so much snow."

"You did? When?"

"I was pretty little.. I think maybe six?" I closed my eyes for a minute, remembering.

We had planned a road trip to visit my dad's cousins. Dad had insisted that it would be a lot more fun than taking a plane. Mom hadn't been so sure.

"That was a long time ago." She scrunched up her nose.

"I'm not that old." I threw a mini marshmallow at her.

"Was it as pretty as it looks on TV?"

"It was. I mean, some of it was kind of gross like when it was on the street and dirty.. but when it was slowly falling and everything was quiet.. in the moonlight it looked like it was made of glitter."

"Ugh, no fair." She pouted. "Can we go somewhere that has snow? Please?"

"One day, Bug."

She rolled her eyes. "You always say 'one day' and it's probably never going to happen."

"Come on, Miss Drama. We have a Christmas tree to find."

With that, the thoughts of snow were forgotten and she jumped up to get dressed. Getting our tree was just the distraction I needed to calm the storm inside my stomach every time I thought about us meeting Cameron later.

What if this is too much for her? What if she's just being polite? What if she doesn't even like kids??

My thoughts were driving me absolutely crazy. I busied myself cleaning up while Eliza finished getting ready. My phone buzzed and I startled.

I have to grab Eliza early tomorrow

I took a breath before responding.

Why? How early?

I could hear Eliza moving around her room.

Probably 9 at the latest. Plans with Lola

Eliza walked back into the kitchen and shot a look at me.

"Why do you look mad?"

"I'm not mad, kiddo. Just frustrated.."

Does Eliza even kn-

My text was interrupted by the phone ringing.

"Please put Eliza on." Not even a hello from her.

I rubbed the back of my neck slowly and held the phone out. "Here, Bug. It's Mom."

"Mom? Wh- Lola's mom? Oh my gosh! Totally." She gave a squeal. "Okay.. okay.. bye!" She handed the phone back to me.

"So I'll see you guys around 8:30-ish tomorrow. Megan invited Eliza to go with them to the movie the girls have been wanting to see. They already bought tickets for the 10am matinee."

"Did you tell Megan that it was my weekend?"

"No, I didn't. It was an invitation for Eliza, not you. Is there an issue? She's clearly excited to go. She's been talking about this movie for months."

I felt my jaw tense and I turned towards the back door. "We'll see you tomorrow." And then the line went dead.

"Mama? Did she tell you?? I am so excited.." The rest of her chatter about the movie washed over me as I walked over and dropped a quick kiss to the top of her head.
