I let go of Whitney's hand and turned toward the doctor.

"Are you the parents?"

"Yes," we both answered at the same time.

"Great. So, I just took a look at the x-rays and it looks like," she looked at the clipboard in her hands, "Eliza.. has a slightly complicated injury. She has dislocated her left wrist and also sustained a hairline fracture in the same area of the dislocation."

Eliza whimpered and Whitney stroked her hair.

"Could we step into the hallway?" I motioned to the doctor. She glanced towards Whitney, who nodded. Once we were out of hearing range, I turned towards her.

"What is the next step? I'd like to make this as easy as I can for my daughter."

"We can attempt to address the dislocation by using conscious sedation, and then set the fracture with a cast. The other option is to put her completely under."

"Okay, I'd like to discuss this with- If we could discuss this, I would appreciate it." I tried to keep my voice steady.

When I stepped back into the room, Whitney and I discussed the options in whispers while Eliza watched cartoons. It was something else we disagreed about. I didn't like the idea of putting her under, but Whitney insisted she'd already been through enough. After a few minutes of going back and forth, Whitney interrupted me.

"Look, I'm the one who will be signing any documents, so-"

"Are you kidding me right now, Whitney? That is a low blow. She is our daughter." My eyes flashed and I balled up my fists to control the anger I felt coursing through my body.

She looked slightly guilty. "I was just- I'm sorry. I just want to take away her pain."

We both glanced over at her. Her eyes were glassy and fixed on the screen. She looked pale and exhausted.

"Fine," I conceded without another look at Whitney. I walked back over to Eliza. "Hey, Bug. I'm so proud of you." She swung her eyes my way and offered a weak smile. I leaned in to whisper in her ear, "You're a badass."

Her eyes widened before she broke out into a fit of giggles. I wiggled my eyebrows at her and smiled. We both looked over at Whitney who frowned slightly before heading out of the room.

"What's she doing?" Eliza's eyes searched mine.

"She's going to find the doctor so we can get everything ready to get you all fixed up."

Within a few minutes, we were all in the room as the doctor explained what would be happening. Whitney and I reassured Eliza that she'd just be taking a long nap while they fixed her up and when she woke up, we'd be right there with her. Though I could see the worry in her big brown eyes that looked so much like Whitney's, she put on a brave face and nodded solemnly.

I sat in the waiting room while Whitney paced in front of me. I pulled out my phone and instantly felt a small sense of relief to read the message on the screen.

You've been on my mind all day. Call you later?

With a wave of warmth that washed over me, I thought about responding but realized there was a lot to say. I dialed, not sure she'd be available. I walked away from the waiting room, heading towards the vending machines.

"Hey, you.." there was a note of surprise in her voice.

"Is this a bad time? I was going to text back, but-"
