2018

I sipped on my coffee as I waited for my best friend to arrive. I looked around at the art work on the wall as a guy standing at the counter caught my eye. I felt like I knew him from somewhere but I couldn't tell where from, if we'd bumped into each other before or something. He glanced over and flashed a cheeky grin, causing my cheeks to heat up. I smiled back, still trying to work out if we'd met before.

My phone vibrated  disrupting my thoughts.

(B/F/N): Need to cancel! Mum and Dad are going at each other again :/ Promise I will make it up to you!

You: It's okay, here if you need anything

I sighed and locked my phone. I wasn't mad, she had to mediate for her parents all the time when they had their nightly argument.

"Is this seat taken?" My train of thought derailed when I looked up to see the beautiful brunette standing in front of me.

"No, it just became available actually." I finally said, offering a small smile.

"I'm Daniel," he said sitting opposite me, his Australian accent dripping off his tongue like honey.

"I'm (Y/N)," I replied.

We chatted for a while, Daniel buying us more drinks, refusing to let me pay, saying 'A true gentleman wouldn't let a lady as lovely as yourself pay.'

"So what do you do for a living?" he asked as he sat back down, handing me my coffee.

"I'm a freelance film journalist, I haven't found a company that wants to hire me full-time yet."

"Well they're all missing out," he said smiling. I'd never met someone with such a happy and contagious smile.

"What about you? I feel like I know you from somewhere but I can't place from where." He chuckled, placing his mug on the table.

"I'm an F1 driver." All the pieces finally clicked in my head and my eyes widening, causing him to chuckle again.

"I used to watch it with my dad. What's it like? Have you ever had to pee in the car before?" I asked, to which he burst out laughing and shook his head.

"Just a little bit of excitement piddle."

We stayed there until the café closed, Daniel walking me home as it had gotten dark and he wanted to make sure I got home safe.

As we said goodbye on the porch we exchanged numbers and I left him with a kiss on the cheek, hoping he would call me soon.

I stood in Renault's garage at the Nürburgring with Daniels personal trainer, chatting about how well Daniel was doing in the race.

"Y'know I don't think Daniel has taken a friend to as many races as you have," he said glancing over at me, my cheeks slowly changing to a light shade of pink but thankfully hidden by my mask.

Daniel and I hadn't told anyone apart from our families, mainly for privacy but I was also worried my work would be overlooked if everyone thought of me as the girlfriend of Daniel Ricciardo.

"I must be very lucky," I responded as we watched Daniel start his final lap.

As he crossed the line the garage errupted with cheers, Michael giving me a hug before we watched the screen clapping.

After they finished up at the podium we waited in the garage, chatting to some of the mechanics, everyone full of energy and excitement.

As I spoke to the group a pair of arms wrapped around my waist, picking me up and spinning me around. As my feet touched the ground I'm twirled round into Daniel's chest. His fingers lifted my chin and pressed his lips to mine, his arm pulling me tighter to his chest.

As we pulled away he had the biggest grin I'd ever seen, which was saying something. I wrapped my arms around his waist, hugging him tightly.

"You forgot your shoey superstar!" I said giggling, pressing a kiss to his cheek.

"Well it looks like you can join me then."

"Hang on, are we gonna gloss over what happened just now?" Michael asked, confusion on all of their faces.

"It's only taken you two years to work out, catch up!" Daniel responded before pressing a kiss to the side of my head and leading me back to his motorhome so he could do his shoey.
