Amelia
Today is a beach day with the whole family. And I couldn't be more excited. Finally time to break out that swimsuit.
Mom and Dad watch Delilah closely as she jumps the waves to make sure she's safe. Dad even puts her on his shoulders while she shrieks excitedly.
Robbie splashes around with Adrian, running up and down the shore, while Cassidy wears her coverup dress and looks on nervously.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
"I can't wear my bikini...not like this. I still...I'm still...not a g-girl. Not physically." She blushes in embarrassment.
"Hey, I'm sure it looks great on you. Wear it with pride. And if anyone says a word, you know your moms will kill them." I reassure her.
"Yeah...but I'm still...I'm still so uncomfortable in my body. I hate it." She covers her face in her hands.
"Listen...I know it's hard for you, but I'll stay with you. So will Presley. We're family. It's what we do." I reply.
She smiles. "Yeah. You know what, screw Teresa!"
"Umm...yeah, screw Teresa!" I cheer, not knowing who the hell that is.
"Oh yeah. Teresa is this girl back home who won't call me the right pronouns. On purpose." She explains.
I nod. "Screw her."
Cassidy takes off her coverup, revealing a gorgeous pink bikini. I gasp. "Oh Cass, you look incredible!"
She beams. "Thanks, Amelia! I love it!"
She runs into the waves, taking Presley's hand, who doesn't jump waves, but sits by the water. She's being careful with her pregnancy.
With my mother's history of miscarriages, I definitely understand that.
I was pretty young when Mom first lost a baby. She was in the supermarket with me when suddenly she just...crumbled in pain.
She gasped and held her stomach, pulling me close to her. Robbie was only two.
I remember her reaching over to Dad who ran to her, dropping the groceries in panic, hearing her scream.
I don't really remember much after that since I was so young, but I do know she lost the baby right then and there. And she didn't come out of her bedroom for weeks.
Dad told me that the new baby they were so excited about had gone to be an angel.
I know that hit Mom hard. Delilah was such a surprise because of this. Her doctor told her she couldn't have more children.
She's her rainbow baby. The rainbow after the storm. And I know Mom wouldn't change things if it meant Delilah wasn't here.
She had two other miscarriages before I was even born. I was a miracle too. It wasn't an easy road for my parents.
Thinking about all of this, I hug my parents close. Mom smiles at me as we sit on a towel and watch my younger siblings play.
"What was that for?" She asks.
"I'm just happy. And grateful for you." I say.
"Aww. I love my family! Alright!" Grammy Lin joins our hug enthusiastically.
"Watch Delilah for a few minutes?" Dad asks.
I nod. "Sure."
Grammy Lin, Dad, and Mom continue to talk while I go to a food stand to get an ice cream, keeping my eyes on the water.
"Amelia, is that you?" A boy asks, shocked.
"Umm...yeah?" I reply in confusion.
"It's Ryan! From school! It's been a while!" He greets me.
I know who Ryan is, but God I never thought he'd talk to me. He's only my BIGGEST crush.
"What's up?" I ask, trying to sound cool.
"You look cute in your swimsuit. I thought I'd come over and say hello." He answers.
I blush. "Oh...thanks Ryan."
He smiles. "How about we go over to the lifeguard's supply shed? It's always abandoned. Just...you and me?"
I gasp. "M-Me?!"
Ryan nods. "Yeah...I thought it would be fun. You're...pretty cute, Amelia."
I look back at Delilah. She's fine. And this will take like...five minutes tops. She'll be okay for a few minutes.
This is my first kiss, after all.
"Umm...yeah." I reply.
"Nice." He grabs my hand and we go to the lifeguard's shed of supplies. When we enter, he tells me to close my eyes.
His lips touch mine and I feel myself blush. Then I hear a giggle. Wait a second.
I open my eyes, seeing that I'm not kissing Ryan. I'm kissing the CPR dummy.
Ryan cackles, and beside him is Dakota. With her phone out. Filming me.
"D-Dakota?!" I scream.
"Hahaha oh my god, look at your FACE!" She shrieks happily.
I burst into tears while they continue to laugh, bumping into Dad as I run back to the beach.
"Amelia! Where were you?! Delilah nearly drowned! We trust you for a couple minutes and you can't even do a simple task?" Dad yells.
"I...I..." I stammer.
"She could have died! Robbie is the only reason she's okay! What were you thinking?!" He rants, looking absolutely terrified at the near loss of Delilah.
"Oh my god...Dad, I didn't know. I'm so so sorry. I thought-" I cry.
"You're grounded! And I'm taking your phone! This has to be the most irresponsible thing you've ever done!" Mom adds.
I continue to cry, wiping the tears from my face. "Mom...Daddy, I didn't mean to...I'm so sorry...I...Dakota..."
"Oh stop it! Wait in the car, I'll be there in a second." Mom fumes, hugging my sister, who looks pale and scared. God, what have I done?
I do as she says, waiting in the car. I'm such a dummy. I couldn't even do what they asked of me. And it could've cost my sister her life.
Not another word is said on the drive home. But Robbie makes sure to glare at me and make me feel even worse.
I mean, from his perspective, I'm just careless. And...maybe I am. But I didn't mean for it to happen.
I'm just glad Delilah is safe. But Dakota has made one thing clear. She isn't going to leave me alone.
