Amelia

The doorbell chimes, and I run to answer it, thinking it's Grandma and Grandpa.

When I open the door, my heart does a flip. The Pesto family is on my front porch.

"Amelia!" Colette hugs me tightly. She's my best friend. It's not that I didn't want to see her. It's...

"Oh lord, are you going to do this every time you see each other?" Dakota rolls her eyes.

Dakota. She's what made my heart flip. "H-Hi Dakota." I say.

She doesn't say anything, her parents speaking up. "It's so nice to see you. We heard about Cassidy and came to support all of you." Aunt Tammy greets.

Aunt Tammy and Uncle Jimmy aren't really related to me, but my parents have known them for a long time.

"Mom! Dad! Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Tammy are here!" I call.

Mom smiles brightly as she enters the foyer, hugging both of them. "Tammy! Jimmy Jr! It's been too long!"

Colette excitedly tells me all about her own stuff. Like gossip. I don't mind. It makes her happy.

Dakota instantly looks me up and down, sneering at my outfit. "Who dressed you, your mom?"

"Dakota, shut up." Colette says.

"Mom! Colette told me to shut up!" She whines.

"Girls, please behave." Uncle Jimmy groans.

We hang out as usual, with Dakota trying to find something better to do. Too cool for us, I guess.

"Oh...My...God..." Dakota says.

"What?" I ask, dreading whatever she's going to spout next.

"What is this?! Oh my god, it's so childish!" She holds out something from my dresser.

"That's Horselain!" I try to snatch it from her. "It's my mom's! Please put it down!"

"Horselain...I'm going to die, that's so dumb." She teases, holding the precious sculpture loosely.

Colette speaks up. "Dakota, it's important to her. Just stop being like this."

I nod. "Please just put it back. My mom really loves that thing."

Dakota ponders this, purposefully dropping it and it shatters into a million pieces.

"No! Dakota, why would you do that?!" Colette screams at her twin.

Near tears, I see my mother enter. "Girls what is going-" She stops dead in her tracks when she sees the broken horse.

"Oh Amelia, what happened?" She questions me.

"It wasn't my fault! Dakota grabbed it from my dresser and broke it on purpose!" I defend myself.

"It's true, Mrs. Belcher." Colette backs me up.

Dakota gasps in fake shock. "I didn't do it on purpose! I would never! It was simply an accident!"

Mom sighs. "That's a shame...but I'm glad you didn't cut yourselves on the broken pieces."
