Lindsey had been gone a week, and it was affecting Stevie more every day, she would find herself doing a chore and then next thing is she would be in floods of tears unable to move

Every time she thought about the baby she was carrying it reminded her of what she had just lost, so it was easier for her to pretend that there was nothing growing inside her, so that’s exactly what she did

Today was Adam’s third birthday, and she had phoned Lindsey and told him he had to be there for it, even if he didn’t feel like Adam was his son, Lindsey had also asked if he could bring her, Stevie still didn’t know her name but she had emotionally agreed to it none the less, although the last thing she wanted was to be faced with the woman that replaced her

Stevie was in the sitting room with the children, Lily was doing nothing but asking where her father was and when she wasn’t doing that she was doing nothing, literally nothing, she wouldn’t play, she would hardly talk, all she wanted was her daddy home, and that’s all Stevie wanted to!

“Mama, is daddy coming for my party?” Adam asked as he toddled over to Stevie on the sofa

“Yeah he’s coming later baby”

“Why isn’t he here every day mommy?” Lily asked sadly

“Um, your daddy...wanted to live somewhere else” Stevie couldn’t lie to her children

“Why mommy? Does he not love us anymore?” Lily was in a questioning mood

“Of course he loves you baby, and your brother, it’s just daddy doesn’t love me anymore, he likes someone else now, and he’s bringing her later” Stevie kept her tears in but saw them forming in her daughters eyes

“I don’t want a new mommy!” Lily shouted

“You’re not getting a new mommy Lily, but I want you to be nice to her okay? And I...come here Adam” Stevie waited until both of the kids were standing in front of her

“After today, I’m not sure when your daddy will come over again, so before he goes tonight I want you to give him the biggest hug goodbye, and tell him that you love him very much” Stevie realised she couldn’t hold the tears back any longer and let them fall

“Goodbye like see you soon goodbye?” Adam asked

“No baby, goodbye as in goodbye” Stevie’s two babies climbed into her lap and they all cuddled together as each one of them shed tears, she knew the children wouldn’t understand but she had to explain it the best she could

A short while later they were interrupted by the doorbell, Lily ran to the door before Stevie could get up and she heard the child squealing excitedly

“Uncle Mick, Uncle Mick!” Lily hung onto his leg until he picked her up

Stevie walked through to the hall with Adam and Mick smiled widely the boy

“Well Happy Birthday young man!” Mick said and took Adam from Stevie; he now had one child on each hip

“So have you had any presents yet?” Adam just shook his head

“Mommy said I had to wait for later”

“Oh you’re a hard woman Stevie!” Mick joked, to which Stevie smiled weakly, Mick put the two children down and crouched to their level

“Hey, Auntie Chris and Uncle John are getting stuff from the car, why don’t you go find them” both Adam and Lily had excited looks on their faces as they ran out the front door to the drive; Mick was now alone with Stevie

“How are you?”

“Yeah I’m...”

“Don’t lie to me Stevie, Christine told me” he opened his arms and Stevie walked into them

“I just don’t know what to do Mick, I love him so much and he doesn’t want me” Stevie wiped her tears away

“I really don’t have anything to suggest sweetheart, only that he’s made a big mistake” They heard John and Christine walking towards them so Stevie put her smile back on

Stevie was in the kitchen later that afternoon, finishing the last little bit of decoration on Adams homemade birthday cake, when Chris came in

“Stevie”

“I’m almost done, I’ll be in, in a second” Stevie was concentrating on the cake

“Stevie, Lindsey’s here” Stevie didn’t like the look on Christine’s face

“I know he’s brought his new girlfriend with him Chris, don’t worry” Stevie told her sadly

“Stevie, did you ever ask Lindsey what her name was?”

“No why?”

“I think you need to go and see honey” Stevie was confused as she walked out the kitchen and into the hallway, she saw Lindsey taking the coat off his girlfriend, and then she turned round and Stevie gasped

“Carol Ann”
