MADISON

"Madi you've got to be kidding!" My best friend yelled over the computer screen. I gave her a sheepish smile.
I had just told her about Alan, our entire 'love story' and how it came to an end.
"But it's all over now. It was good while it lasted." I shrugged.

Maya was my closest friend. We told each other everything. She was down to earth and very lovable. I hadn't seen her in over a month and a bit since I started living here, but I hoped I'd get to see her soon cause I missed her so much. She had frizzy brown hair, gorgeous dimples on her cheeks and mysterious hazel eyes.

"He sounds too perfect to be thrown away like that..." she trailed off with a pout.

"Well he clearly doesn't trust me. And worst thing is he didn't even try to deny that there was stuff he wasn't telling me about. I barely know him." I fell back onto my pillows in frustration. The more I talked about him the more agitated I got.

"We'll have you given him a reason to trust you?" She asked tentatively.

I jolted up fiercely. "Of course I have! Isn't being his girlfriend enough?"
Why was she suddenly putting the blame on me? What had I done wrong? He was the one with the sudden outbursts of anger and the one keeping secrets!

"You've only been his girlfriend for what, less than a month? If I were him I'd wait a bit before telling you about my dark past."

"Dark past? What kind of dark past could he possibly have? He used to be a computer geek in high school!"
I was just about ready to pull my hair out of my scalp.

"Oh so you've been stalking him on the internet now?" Maya smirked.

I blushed. I had done a bit of research on him before taking the job only because I was curious. "It was mandatory for confidential reasons." I explained simply.

"Well I think you should at least give him a second chance. It seems he really cares about you." She told me.

Maya was alway right about everything, but I wasn't sure about giving him a second chance just yet. We needed this break, right?

"Thanks for the advice, I hope I can see you soon again." I blew her a kiss over the FaceTime call and she pretended to catch it.

I switched off my laptop and placed it on my side table. That night was spent overthinking.
We were only on a break, it wasn't forever but how do people even get together again after a break. Like 'oh, our break is over now we can start dating again'. I hadn't dated anyone before so I wasn't sure and Maya had had a steady relationship with her boyfriend since High School so I couldn't ask her.

Maybe I should stop ignoring him cause even though it made me feel in control it didn't make me feel any better.

I wonder what was even going on inside his own head. Well he did try ask me to join him for lunch today and I refused. But it also seemed like he was happy with us being broken up. I mean he hadn't even tried to protest or get us back together. He just accepted it so easily that I was kind of disappointed in him.

He'd been cooped up in his office for the past few weeks and when I'd walk in he'd look tired and his desk was always mess of papers. It was just today that I heard him leave his office. I'm not sure when he came back but I heard his bath running when I walked down the hallway to get back to my bedroom just an hour ago.

No one had ever riled me up to this extent.

I woke up early morning and made my way into the kitchen. These days Alan was waking up later than usual so I had a lot of time to myself. I made put a bagel, an egg and two strips of bacon on a plate. It was a beautiful day so I sat at the table outside, just where Alan and I had been sitting together a few weeks ago.
A nice breeze flew in from the ocean and I hugged my flannel jacket closer to myself. I only had in an oversized t-shirt underneath.  I'd underestimated how cold it would be. But still I stayed and continued shoveling food into my mouth.
