Jonas's thought of the echo was quickly replaced by the perception of whatever was awaiting them at the bottom of the hill. Lights came into view, and the sound, singing, it was called grew more emphatic by the moment. Gabe let out a squeal as it came into view.

Jonas shivered, which was agonizingly horrid, while trying to withstand the cold of the snow, and he summoned all the warm memories he had left. Protectively, he held Gabe close as the sled skidded to a stop at the bottom of the hill. Regardless of the pain, Jonas stumbled forward, his knee still not quite healed enough to walk properly. As the time caught up to him, he began feeling the sharp, breath-taking pain. Mockingly, his stomach resumed the sensation of starvation that the sled had momentarily taken away. He advanced down the first road, Gabe softly whimpering as he crept closer to Jonas. This is it, Jonas thought. It was a town, but they had colors, so many colors, much more than his old community ever had.

As he slowly moved forward, it seemed as though they could all feel too. Tenderly, they sang those songs, and it was so touching to Jonas. Throughout the street there was people, gathered around stores and houses, singing to the people passing in the street. There were real smiles, too. Jonas noticed an odd-shaped moving metal thing with people inside of it, with wheels like a bike, but four of them. Car, his brain remembered. He made his way across the bustling street towards a building in the center of it all. It was a big, tall, white building, with little square windows. As he staggered down the walkway, the doors slid open, as if they knew he was coming. But the pain was too much, and the nebulous whisper of hunger is all he could think of as he crumbled to the floor, Gabe, who seemed almost blue, still clutched in his arms. Gabe, he reminisced.
