Daniel was constantly practising his bow and knives, even doing some exercises with Rain to get used to her and she to him, which was hardly needed since the two had a natural bond between them.
Before he knew it the week was gone and it was time for what he and Maddie had been talking about non-stop since Halt and Gilan had told them. Now he, Maddie, Gilan and Halt were watching as the Redmont embassy were getting ready to head out for Castle Araluen. The ones going were Baron Arald, Sir Rodney, Martin(though the four Rangers couldn't understand why), Lady's Sandra, Pauline and Alyss. George was also going as a negotiator in case some of the foreign country nobles started to have a dispute over something. A few of Sir Rodney's senior knights and the scribe master Nigel.
As the knights packed any remaining equipment into their saddles of their massive battle horses, Alyss walked over to Daniel and drew him into a hug. Daniel, being the one who didn't care for public affection tried, and failed to escape his mothers hold. "Ger'off meh," he mumbled awkwardly. Alyss drew back and looked at him sternly, "Now do as your told and be careful. This is a dangerous trip and not one I would normally approve of, but your an Apprentice now..." She left the sentence unfinished and couldn't seem to bring herself to finish it. Daniel smiled at his mom and did so reassuringly at her. "Don't worry, I'll be fine, how hard can it be to look after two old men and a snobby princesses?"
Alyss smiled when Maddie retaliated, "Excuse me, what did you just say?" while Halt and Gilan just raised an eyebrow. Halt leaned toward Gilan and spoke quietly to him, "What did he say, I couldn't hear him." Gilan just looked at Halt in a weird expression before slowly turning and going over to his horse. "Was it something I said?" Halt called after him before he broke in a wolfish grin, "Such fun in tormenting younger people." He looked over his shoulder and called out to Daniel, "Come on Daniel, it's time we got moving." Daniel looked up at his mom and she smiled before giving him one more hug, then letting him go to watch him run over to Halt and the others and mounting Rain.
They began riding with one final wave to the Redmont embassy before all four Rangers rode in the direction of the forest. By the time they reached the edge of the forest, the sun was truly risen and the birds began to sing. Looking back Daniel saw the small rider's in the distance, riding in the opposite direction. Then they were gone from view as they entered the shade of the forest.
And Daniel felt as if it were going to be a long time before he saw them again.
