"We're trapped!" a boy of no more than 15 shouted. "They came from nowhere and are everywhere, how are we supposed to beat a enemy that knows all about us yet we know nothing of them?" a girl questioned. "Shut up! All of you. We do as we were instructed. To get out of here and warn someone-anyone on what's coming for them," said an older boy.
"But how? Everyone is either running away screaming or trying to kill us on the spot," another girl spoke up." "Maria has a point," said the first girl." "Who cares right now! Let's focus on getting out of here alive!" "Chris is right, we need a way out without being seen..." "What about the tunnels?"
The older boy thought for a moment, "Yes...yes that might just work if we get there fast enough. That bloody traitor doesn't know about the tunnel system. Hurry, to the horses before we loose our chance."
Mounting up they spurred their horses in a gallop and sped for the nearest tunnel, just kilometres away from where they were. Fighting was breaking out around them but they were moving to fast to be conflicted. "Faster! We're almost there!" The horses hooves echoed around the tunnel walls and bounced around them. It was dark and damp, forcing the riders to slow their pace in order to prevent their horses from slipping on the slick ground.
After what seemed to be ages of darkness, they reached the end of the tunnel and burst into the night air.
Only to be met with Nightriders. Pulling hard on the reigns they stopped their horses before running into they enemy's swords and were instantly surrounded. "Well, looks like we caught ourselves four little runts running away, we'll see what our commander has to say about that. Didn't anyone tell you that abandoning your comrades was a crime and punishable by death?"
"Your not one of us! You don't deserve to be wearing our weapons, weapons forged for those who swore their life to protect those who couldn't protect their own!" Maria shouted at him. The mans arrogant grin was replaced with a scowl of disgust. Drawing his sword he urged his horse forward closer to her, "What would you know of--" he was cut off as an arrow went through his throat.
Before anyone else knew what was happening the other party of men were shot down in the space of a heartbeat. "Go!" Said a voice behind them. "Go now while we hold them off!"
Without turning back, without a final good-bye to the place that had once been their home, they galloped their horses away. Only when they reached the safety of the woods from across the marsh did they turn back and watch the smoke and flames devour their home.
The Corps in the Mountains had finally been devoured by it's own demons
"Common," spoke the older boy "We have to go." "But we can't just leave them! This is our fight to!" Cried the second girl "I know your sad about leaving your mentor behind Madiko, but we have to do what Lieutenant Will told us to do. We have to warn others of what's happening." "And how are we going to do that ?" spoke Chris.
"By going to the Rangers."
