Gun

Ouch.

Seriously, I have to learn to say no, but it had been totally impossible.

Those three little monsters put out their lower lips and blinked their innocent eyes, and I fell faster than a fat man at a buffet.

No offense to fat men though, they are quite huggable.

I'm pretty sure sleeping in the tree house had been the kids' idea, even if they sent Alice to ask me.

With such a sweet voice, they knew that I was going to be unable to resist. I have to find some other defense mechanism for the future.

I didn't want to open my eyes, but those stupid birds singing happily were making it impossible for me to go back to sleep.

“Stupid birds,” I growled.

I felt something move next to me.

Slowly, I moved my hand down and felt a warm little body, it was too small to be Chimon or Theo, so it had to be Alice. My touch caused her to snuggle closer to me.

The sound of the back door opening and closing forced my eyes open.

“Good morning, Gun.” Theo whispered as he entered the tree house and I smiled in response. Chimon was lying next to him, still sleeping peacefully.

“Hey, Sleeping Beauty,” Off said. He was holding a tray of muffins, two coffees, and a few juice boxes and he was already fully dressed for work.

“You better be talking about one of the children,” I replied, still disoriented.

The mornings and I were not the best of friends. I forced myself to sit up, rearranging a still sleepy Alice so that she rested her head on my lap.

“Nope, sorry,” he replied.

“Theo is the only one awake. I doubt he appreciates me calling him that,” he smiled and handed me a coffee.

“I have to go to work soon. I will drop some money in case you need to buy something for the children.”

I shook my head, taking a drink of the coffee.

“If I buy something for them, it will be because I want to. You don't have to pay for it.”

He chopped one of the juices with a straw before handing it to Theo.

“You have to let me do something. I can't leave you my children without paying you something in return.”

“You can help Chim with his soccer practice,” I offered and took one of the hot muffins and waved it in front of Chimon's nose who hummed and opened his eyes.

“Deal done,” Off laughed. “But I have to buy him something too, it's only fair.”

Chimon sat up and groaned, stretching his arms with a muffin in his hand. “Boy, what a night.”

"Okay," I agreed. “By the way, thanks for breakfast.”

“You're welcome,” he smiled before sitting down to nibble on his muffin.

Theo crawled over to me and lightly punched his little sister on the nose. “Alice,” he crooned quietly.

“Shh,” she whispered. “Alice is asleep.”

“I'm going to eat your muffin,” he warned playfully.

“No,” she complained, but with a smile on her face.
