Off

White was giving Gun the evil eye for the rest of the afternoon.

Obviously, his hatred of mice was more extreme than I had imagined.

Gun hadn't given me away as his accomplice yet, but he had me holding my breath.

Either way, I would watch my back.

After everyone left, Gun wanted to have some things done at his house before he came.

Tim and Alice wanted to stay with him, so I figured he would be alone for a bit.

I didn't expect Chimon to want to come with me.

Of course, Gun said it was fine, and I definitely didn't care, so we both headed home.

"Your dad told me that you guys talked a while ago...about your biological father."

I wish Gun had told me what they talked about earlier, this is making me nervous.

Chimon wrinkled his nose. "He's not my dad, he didn't love me." His voice was sad, but he shrugged like it wasn't a big deal.

I parked the car to the side.

"Hey," I said softly, drawing his gaze to me. "He didn't know you. If he had, there would be no way he could have turned away, he misses it and I earn it."

"You want to be my dad?" He asked as if he couldn't believe it.

"If I can talk to your dad about it," I replied. "Is that okay with you?"

His eyes lit up. "Yes!" Then he began to ramble excitedly. "Can we go fishing? Dad tried to take me, but he caught an eel and it jumped out of the boat, he said that he scared all the fish. It was fun."

I giggled. "I'll be happy to take you fishing, but for now, we'd better get home before your dad is there. He'll think I kidnapped you."

"Can I drive?"

"Ask me again when you can reach the pedals," I promised.

Chimon smiled. "I had to ask, Dad would have said no."

If I was lucky enough to be his father, I knew he was going to keep me on lead, this boy was too smart for his own good, but he wouldn't have wanted him any other way.

We got there before Gun, so Chimon got the idea that we should bake something for when they get there.

Luckily, I had one of those ready-to-bake chocolate chip cookie mixes in the fridge and the end product made us look like gourmet chefs.

As long as Gun couldn't find the wrapping paper, he wouldn't know the difference.

"Honey, we're home," Teo crooned as they walked into the house.

Gun was holding Alice, who took a deep breath. "I smell cookies."

I smiled and kissed my little girl and my boy. "Chim and I have been enslaving ourselves in the kitchen all night to make these to you guys."

"Really?" Gun said. "I use the ones that are ready to bake."

Well, shit.

I sighed. "We also did."

"Enslaving, huh? What? Couldn't they open the package?"

"I did that part," Chimon said proudly.

We sat around the table, eating cookies and drinking milk.

The boys were telling us all about their stay with Arm and Jane.
