The journal
It was summer. The twins had been trying to reach Merlin since their birthday, but their owl, a birthday gift from Merlin, always returned with unopened letters. The last time they had heard from him was on their birthday. He had sent them a letter with and said the owl was now theirs and that there was everything they needed to make sure she was okay was in a package in the owlery, waiting for them. The letter also said that he would see them later that summer.
Fred and George's mum and dad had told them to pack everything as they wouldn't be returning to the burrow for a long time. So they sat on Fred's empty bed, George's head buried in Fred's neck, and Fred had his arms around George. Everything was packed. They were taking everything in, while waiting for everyone else to finish.
"Fred, George Gwen has a package for you guys." Their mum called out. The twins ran downstairs with what was left of their stuff in bags thrown over their shoulders. Fred held Gwen's cage in his hand.
"Now, you'll have to open it when we come to where we are going." Their dad said as he walked out of the fireplace.
"But dad..." Their shoulders slumped.
"No buts." Molly's voice cut off their whine. "Now Fred, you first. Remember to say it loud and clear: 12 Grimmauld place."
Fred frowned but obeyed his mum. He grabbed a handful of floo powder and walked into the fireplace. With a loud and clear '12 Grimmauld Place', the green fire swallowed him, and he was off. George was right behind him.
Fred and George looked around as the rest of the Weasleys, and Hermione came through the floo network. Sirius Black walked the corner with one Remus Lupin right behind him. Once greetings were exchanged, Arthur let the twins to their room while Molly took Ron and the girls.
As soon as Arthur closed the door, they sat down on the queen-sized bed. They rushed to open the package. Inside was a card, two small knives, and a book that looked like a journal. The card confirmed that it was from Merlin and explained why he hadn't responded; Gwen hadn't found him as the last letter was the first one he got. Merlin also said it was only around a week till he would see them. They wrote in the journal a 'greeting.' a few minutes later, they got an answer in the form of Merlin's handwriting as he explained what the journal was and how it worked. They ended up talking for hours until Ginny came to get them for dinner.
When they got back to their room and opened the journal, they noticed the words stood out:
Don't reply; I'll talk when I can, but I can't now. Be safe and listen to your mother.
