Benny Watts loved himself. It was no secret that growing up a chess prodigy in the eye of the media makes you a bit of a megalomaniac, and that was the case for Benny, which was probably why he didn't take kindly to it being pointed out by the assistant to the editor of his book.
Lauren Reynolds was an editor, or at least she was going to be according to the plan she had lined up for herself when she was about nine years old. Surprisingly enough, she wasn't very good at calculating how much it would actually take her to get from a photographer to her dream job before she turned twenty— but she's getting there, and buttering up to the man whose assistant she's become, Thomas Lawrence, is part of the plan.
What wasn't, was getting to know Benny Watts, and maybe understanding a little better what it was that made him love himself so much.
