Steven could not say he did not like you. You were a pleasant person, not too loud or obnoxious, and you were responsible and motherly.

But something about you was stiff and humorless. When he said "don't you ever have fun"? You had smiled at him and said "Citadel and Master Yin asked me that, too."

Master Yin was the same person that you said died 2280 years ago, 2280 long years that Citadel had known you for all of- and in that time, he never saw you laugh. Not once

Steven intended to break this. And the holidays were the perfect time.

He peeked into the window of the house you shared with Citadel and Minerva (built perfectly into the side of the temple by Bismuth) with a snowball in his hand.

He snickered evilly. "...After this, I'll make it so (Name) is doubling over in laughter." He said.

He jumped in the air, wearing his Santa outfit. You hadn't been on earth in years and came from an ancient era. There was a good chance you believed in Santa.

He saw you in your room, decorated with all different shades of blue. You were humming a Christmas song while writing a grocery list down.

Climbing in through the chimney, Steven threw a sack over his shoulder and landed safely. The ash and dust all around clogged Steven's lungs, forcing a powerful cough out of him.

A small gasp from a small person was heard from the other side of the room. "Are you that 'Santa Claus' person Citadel was talking about? Citadel said you only came on Christmas- what're you doing here early?" Minerva questioned, oddly calm.

"I...Uh..." Steven racked his brain for a lie. "I'm here to uh...check up on the kids! Making sure nothing bad's going on! You know- patrolling!" He lied nervously.

Minerva narrowed her eyes at him, drinking warm milk from her cup in suspicion. "Okay!" She said, her entire attitude changing. "I'll go get (Name)!" She chirped.

"You do that, Minerva. You do that." He nodded.

"Hiya, Steven!"

Steven shrieked a girlish scream, quickly moving to the side in shock. "Citadel- you nearly gave me a heart attack!" He panted as Citadel looked down on him.

"Sorry, Ste-man! Whatcha doing in that Santa getup, anyway?" Steven shushed his older cousin. "I'm trying to surprise (Name)!" Citadel blinked at him with a blank smile.

"(Name)'s not going to fall for that. Ever."

Steven frowned. "Well, I gotta try! She always seems so..." Not being able to find the words, Citadel finished for him. "Absent? Distant? Humorless?"

Steven nodded sadly. "I just want to make her laugh. You said it yourself- she never laughs!" He exclaimed, dropping his Santa sack. Citadel nodded slowly, as if he knew how to console Steven.

"I see." He said. "I get it- (Name) smiles all the time, but it's never in amusement. It's usually a formality, I think." He said. "Her mother is BLUE DIAMOND. Laughing isn't a thing she does."

"I still gotta try." Steven says. Citadel sighed and walked away. "I tried." He'd said, stealing one of the cookies in the kitchen and exiting by...trapdoor?

Steven readied himself when he heard your footsteps, retreating up the chimney, ready to pounce. "Minerva, you said a jolly fat man came to visit us...?" Your calm voice came.

"He was right here-" Minerva's sentence was cut short as Steven jollily fell from the chimney.

"HO HO HO, MERRY CHRIST- AAH!"

You had shrieked and threw a loose brick at him.

"Okay, so maybe (Name) doesn't like surprises."

MERRY CHRISTMAS, AMIGOS!
