KAIDEN'S PERSPECTIVE:

The evening air was cooling rapidly.

The atmosphere was damp with the warning of snow; the icy clouds above growled incessantly. Maybe Medora would have its first proper blizzard since winter began a few weeks ago. Kaiden glanced up at the rumbling sky and saw the beginnings of snowflakes forming in the frigid air, swinging down to the ground. The specks flung themselves through the air as if controlled by a pendulum. Even the small stones beneath him in the Lake's shore had begun to crystallize with frost.

He picked up his leisurely pace and made toward the Ezera forest. In the pines' limb-like shadows, he made out the path that led to his and Alex's home.

Shivers drew their icy claws across his arms; trails of goosebumps led like fingers behind them. As Kaiden hurried home, he turned his face down to avoid the gathering snow reaching his eyes. What he saw there made him gasp.

Winding casually away from his ankles wound a string of glowing, liquid-like gold. It left pricks of shining golden dust behind it. Kaiden felt in a trance as he gazed, mindless, at the string. He felt all coherent thoughts being sucked out of him as the line ducked away. It twirled through the air, ducking around trees before melting into impenetrable darkness. Without permission, his feet sped after it.

Soon, he was racing after the glow, drawn on by something he couldn't name. He skidded around trees and leapt across rocks and almost felt possessed-- as if it were his body, but a stranger's mind doing this.  Maybe there was no mind at all, only an inexplicable force. Kaiden couldn't care. Even when he tried to stop, his fingers shook indignantly and he sped on. Eventually, as stepped over an icy stream, the scene dissolved into coloured dust. The distorted particles whirled around in an unfelt wind, colouring the inky void he tumbled helplessly down.

A scream of all the pent-up confusion and fear that the cord had buried down tore from his mouth; a ribbon in the abyss of inescapable black.
