KAIDEN'S PERSPECTIVE:

Kaiden lurched up from his troubled sweep of dreams— all starring Alex. His throat was hard and hot.

Rss, rss.  Kaiden's gasp was kept in his throat when he saw a skinny figure. It's breath plumed out into the air-like floating liquid.

  He slipped out of bed.

The figure spun around so quickly he jumped back before he saw her face. Prints of his shoes were left in the carpet, leading a trail toward Alex.

 'Kaiden...' she murmured, stepping closer.

Was this yet another dream? Was she really here? Was this a dream?

 'I'm so sorry.'

No. That was Alex's voice so precisely, his mind could not have conjured it.

'I know I was stupid and I shouldn't have said what I did, and you don't deserve that, but I just don't know what happened. I'll never do anything like that again, I swear... But--'

He stepped forward, slowly, and she flinched again. Shaking awfully, he lifted his fingers to her cheek and brought them across the warm skin. Electric spasms shot through his body at the touch and within seconds, he was tingling all over. Alex's trembling hands clutched at him until his knuckles went white.

Before he lost his shaky determination, he found his mouth moving over hers.

For a moment, she locked and pulled back. Fear struck Kaiden; had she been here for this, for him? Or just to apologize and say goodbye fairly? But, before he could think anything else, her lips were crashing down on his as they danced around the room. He let his hands roam free as long as it meant Alex stayed with him.

Hours later, when Kaiden's body-- every part of it-- was exhausted, he slumped down into bed beside her. His hand snaked around her back as he closed his eyes, sighing. But his fingers snagged on something. It was like...a  gap. As he explored, he realised he could fit his entire finger inside it. When her shirt had been peeled off, he saw that it was a scar. It slithered around her back like a pattern of shadows and light. It was strange that a scar could remind him of an experience. But, as he gazed at the mixture of dark and light almost battling in the war ground of her skin, he was reminded of all she had faced and overcome.

  'It's beautiful,' Kaiden whispered.

'Oh, don't,' Alex laughed in reply. 'That can't be called 'pretty' if you squint, turn your head sideways and turn all the lights off.'

  'Well, let's see.'
