During the Creation Era, the Forerunners once used Thermal Energy as an alternative energy source, when Aether (not to be confused with AetherSlayer) was growing quite ineffective for their already-advanced technology. It was even used to reinforce that Aether. But a female Forerunner scientist named Entity 303 wondered what will happen if that Thermal Energy is used on indigenous lifeforms.

Entity 303 experimented on the indigenous lifeforms of Maethrillian using Thermal Energy. To her surprise, the lifeforms mutated into the firstborn Akrid. The Akrid bent to her will, calling her "mother." Immediately, she created more Akrid that followed her every command, eventually creating an army.

As Faber, the Master Builder, noted the increasing amounts of Akrid, he worried that the Akrid could overpower the Forerunners, and even the Orokin and Eridians. So Faber sent two of his blonde-haired veterans, the Genshin Slayers (the male is named AetherSlayer while the female is named LumineSlayer), to stop the overflow of Akrid. Eventually, the Slayers find Entity 303, the source of the Akrid overflow. The Slayers battle Entity 303 and suppress her from producing more Akrid. But, as a last resort, Entity 303 injects an unholy dose of Thermal Energy into herself, becoming the godlike being she is now, able to control and manipulate both Thermal Energy and Akrid at a cataclysmic rate.
