Andy was on the twentieth hour of a twenty-four hour shift, to say she was exhausted would be an understatement.
Since her father had to step down from captain because of his cancer, her and Jack had been alternating shifts being captain until one of them was ultimately named the permanent captain of Station 19. The extra work would be draining and put a strain on her home life, but she'd worked too hard to pass this opportunity up.
She was on captain duty today, luckily it had been relatively quiet, just a few aid car calls. But there was the looming skyscraper fire downtown that they were bound to get called in to help with soon.
The team was watching the news, mesmerized by the scene that they were all itching to go and fight. But their attention soon shifted when their former captain walked in with a little girl whom they'd come to love over time.
When Andy saw the visitor they had, she couldn't help but smile. "Mija!"
"Hi mama," the little girl smiled as she ran over and jumped into her mother's lap. "I missed you, but now I don't have to miss you anymore cause you are right here!"
"I've missed you too," Andy laughed as she looked down at her daughter.
The team just watched in awe, like they did every time Andy interacted with the little girl. They were just so surprised when they found out she was pregnant because she never seemed like the maternal type. But that didn't stop them from loving watching the two interact.
"Luna, are you gonna say hi to everyone else?" Andy asked her, sometimes she forgot that her mother wasn't the only one in the room.
"Hi!" Luna said, looking around and waving at everyone, they all said their hello's to her and waved back.
Luna was used to being in the station, she practically grew up in it. She loved getting to climb up on the engine and lay on the hoses with her mother, Maya and Vic tagging along sometimes. She loved how everyone's attention would immediately go to her and they would listen to her endless rambling about school or whatever else the four year old had going on in her life.
Andy knew how hard it was on her father after her mother died, that's why she let Luna come to the station as much as she wanted and tried to spend as much as time as possible with her daughter.
Something Andy really loved was that she was never alone. When Luna was a baby, if Andy couldn't find a sitter, she'd bring Luna to the station and everyone would take turns doing desk duty to watch her when they received a call. As she got older, that didn't change, everyone still loved getting to spend time with the little girl and absolutely adored her.
As the team's attention turned back to the tv screen, so did Luna's. She would occasionally turn back and ask Andy questions about how they were going to put out the fire and how they would get everyone out safely. Andy happily answered her questions, just like she always did.
"Do you have to go and put it out?" She asked at one point, turning around in Andy's arms so she was now facing her mother.
"I'm sure we'll have to go and help soon," Andy replied, tucking a piece of Luna's hair behind her ear. "But not yet, so how about we get a snack, hmm?"
The little girl's eyes lit up and she hopped down off Andy's lap, taking off running to the beanery. Soon after, Andy stood up and made her way over as well.
Luna was already looking in the refrigerator when Andy walked in.
"See anything good?" She asked, picking Luna up and situating her on her hip.
"Can I have some strawberries?" Luna asked sweetly and her mother nodded.
Andy sat the little girl on the counter beside the refrigerator before pulling out the container of fresh strawberries they'd bought just yesterday. There wasn't much food they kept in the kitchen that the little girl would like, it was mostly ingredients to make meals and protein bars... lots of protein bars. But they always made sure to pick up some snacks that Luna would like, fruits and some vegetables, occasionally some sweets.
After washing and cutting up the strawberries, Andy put them in a little bowl and handed them to Luna, who patiently sat and watched her do the whole thing.
"You need a snack too," Luna said, popping a strawberry into her mouth. "So you can be strong to put out the fire."
Andy chuckled and shook her head, "What have I told you about talking with your mouth full?"
The little girl quickly finished chewing and then swallowed before answering. "It's not polite..."
"Exactly," Andy nodded then walked over to grab a protein bar from the cabinet.
"I said a snack mommy, not one of those thingys." Luna said, "Abuelito says they aren't good for you and you need real food."
"I think Abuelito means you need real food because you're still growing," Andy began to explain and watched as Luna sat up straighter. "You need to eat all your fruits and veggies so you can get big and strong."
"But no broccoli," The little girl shook her head, making a disgusted face. "That's nasty, ick!"
Before Andy could reply, the alarm went off, signaling that they were officially being called to help with the skyscraper fire downtown. The sudden loud noise caused Luna to jump slightly before she realized what that sound meant. It meant her mother was going to have to leave—leave her.
"I love you, I'll be back before you know it, okay?" Andy said hugging her daughter tightly, never wanted to let go.
She felt Luna nod against her chest, "Please be safe, and don't die."
"I won't baby," Andy replied. "I promise, I'll be back soon."
After placing a quick kiss to her head, Andy was off. Before she walked out door, she looked back one last time at her daughter, who was still sitting on the counter, watching her mother leave. She blew her a kiss and waved before heading out the door.
