"You. Are. Not!" Jamie exclaimed, shocked beyond belief.
April nodded excitedly.
"Yeah... for about three months now actually. I would've told you sooner with him there, but someone got a little too excited about bringing you home." April said, flashing an agitated look in Karai's direction.
The girl who had a constant blank expression plastered on her face was sitting on the school's steps to exchange her school appropriate sneakers for some thick, black, mid-calf high boots that were covered in silver studs. They were waiting for her a few paces away, but Karai either didn't hear them or she was ignoring April's comment. Hoping to not make her anymore standoffish, Jamie patted her friend on the arm to quiet the rage.
"So.... you and Donnie are... dating? Is... is that even ok?" She lowered her voice and looked around like she was discussing covert subject matter.
April broke into a peal of laughter, making Karai eye them from the steps where she was working on the first boot's laces. After a few seconds, April sobered, still holding her sides from laughing.
"I'm sorry, but your face," She giggled. "Yes, it's okay, Jamie Lee Fresco... Look, I know it's surprising to someone who hasn't been around them long enough, but trust me... once you get to know them, you'll understand."
Jamie cocked her head to the side but smiled at April's obvious enthusiasm. The possibility of the turtles dating a human seemed odd to her. She had thought maybe they would want someone similar to themselves, a mutant.... But from the sound of it, there weren't many options since most of the mutants they had encountered had been evil.
And humans can be pretty cool.... sometimes. Girls at least. Now that I think about it, I don't blame April for ditching the whole intraspecies gig. From everything I've dealt with, with human boys, I can attest it's hard to find a good one.
"Well, I'm glad for you April. You definitely look a lot happier about this relationship than your last one." Jamie said.
"I.... I am." She breathed, lowering her eyes for a second in bashfulness.
She then looked over her shoulder to Karai, who was now lacing up the second death-metal shoe that looked like it could pass for a medieval weapon, and nodded to herself. April turned back and cupped her hand around Jamie's ear for confidentiality.
"She's got a thing for Leo too." She whispered gleefully, like it was a long-kept treasure she had been dying to spill.
"No way!" Jamie hissed back.
"Yeah, but don't let on that you know. I don't even think they really know what's happening, her especially."
Jamie nodded reassuringly, happy to have been brought in on the secret. After a second, she realized that this was April trusting her again, completely. She had so long mourned the dissipation of their friendship, thinking that it would never again be as strong as when they were first entering high school together.
Life is funny like that. Sometimes people come into your life and leave just like that. Then others come back to stay.
Karai walked up behind the two in her freshly laced, pro-wrestler shoes and motioned for them to start walking.
And then, there's the third kind that, even if you don't deserve it, come into your life only to make it miserable.
Karai, though somewhat pleasant in her departure from Jamie's apartment the night before, had resumed her need to make Jamie feel insignificant in every way possible since seeing her in school that morning. Jamie had stuck with April, though, refusing to be intimidated by the black cloud that hung over her wherever she went.
