A Ninja's Cause

As it turns out, I didn't see Everly for about forty minutes after they disappeared into the bathroom to change. Helen sat with me to look at the book for about two minutes before she insisted on showing me the playroom that Elliot had designed for the house.

It was decorated for children, with a chart of the night sky on the walls, extra bunk beds, and stuffed animals falling out of a toy chest on the other side of the room. Helen gave me a stuffed llama and gave herself a lion and we played "Moana" for almost the whole time we were in the playroom. I was impressed by her ability to remember the story line and exact lines by heart.

After that, she started asking me lots of different questions, from what my favorite animal was to if I'd ever been in jail.

I wasn't sure how her thought process worked, but it was an eventful few minutes when she was interrogating me.

Finally, she runs to the closet door, pulling out a decent sized cardboard box, and announces in her small voice, "Now we're going to play ninjas!"

"Oh, how do we play ninjas?" I ask her, watching as she pulls out a ninja mask and sword from the box.

She places her hands on her hips, speaking to me in what sounds suspiciously like a condescending voice, "Well, real ninjas fight for a cause."

Playing along, I nod, "Ahhh, of course. And what's our cause?"

"French fries!" She exclaims without pausing.

I stifle a laugh, knowing that it probably wouldn't sit well with the little, red-haired ninja before me if I were to find her cause amusing. I manage to say, "The most important cause of all!"

There's a knock at the door and I turn to see Everly and Ruby standing in the doorway.

Ruby smiles at Helen, "Ah, I thought I heard a couple of ninja's in here. What's going on?"

"I'm playing with my new friend." Helen says innocently, pulling another ninja mask out of the box and throwing it to me.

I hesitate putting the mask on, a little too distracted with how Everly looks.

She has her black hair curled, and she is wearing the most makeup I had ever seen her wear. Her eyelids are darker than normal, her mascara has been put on thick, and her lips are a glossy, pale pink that matched the dress she wore. Everly's dress was pale pink, long, and flowing. A lace shawl covers her shoulders and she wears dangling flower earrings.

"Your new friend, huh?" Ruby said in her fruity voice, raising an eyebrow at me. Ruby wears a similar dress to Everly, although hers seemed more of a blush color and without the lace.

"Yes." She nodded, "George, put your ninja mask on!"

"Oh!" I say, hurrying to put the mask over my head, "Yes, sorry! Here we are. How do I look?"

Helen nods, "Powerful."

"Ah, good. I've always wanted to look powerful," I say with a chuckle, smiling back at Everly.

She grins at me before looking back to Helen, "Well, missy, I've got to take your new friend with me for a while. He's going to be coming to the party."

Helen looks from Everly to me, and then back again, "Can he come play again later?"

Everly and Ruby look at me with uncertainty.

"I think George is probably very busy, Helen-" Ruby starts.

"No, no!" I say quickly, "I'd love to come back and play. We'll let your mum and aunt Everly arrange it later."
