I wake up confused. There's a body against my back, but both Ben and Kota are on the other side of me. Carefully rolling over, I notice it's Luke's back. How could I feel him?
"Luke." I whisper. It's barley getting light out, but I'm wide awake. "Luke." I test my luck and try to rest a hand on his shoulder. It doesn't go through. The heck?
"Anne?" He groans, rolling himself over, freezing when he realizes I was just touching him. "Anne!" He whispers loud. He grabs for my hand, and our hands collide for about thirty seconds of physical touch before mine drops through his.
"Dang it." He groans. "We had it for a second there!" I look at him so confused.
"How did we..."
"Dunno. But I'm bummed it stopped working." He groans.
"You were back to back with me." I tell him. "I could feel you." He gives me a skeptical look. "I'm not lying! You were breathing against me the whole night!" I argue, a little more loudly than needed. He lays a hand over my mouth, and although it doesn't do anything I get the hint.
"Shhhh. I'm sure you did. I just don't know HOW you did." He mumbles softly to me.
"I'm going back to sleep." I reply, rolling over again.
"Hey, don't be like that." He chides, and I roll my eyes. Suddenly there's a hand on me and I'm rolled back towards him.
"Whoa! That was rad! How did you do that?!" I hear Reggie whisper really loudly.
"I... I... I... I... dunno, I wanted her to face me, and I tried to roll her and and and she just rolled!" Luke stumbles through his words, and I let out a laugh at how hard he's struggling to form a sentence.
"Did you do that?!" Reggie asks, looking at me.
"No! I was fighting him!" I whisper back.
"Roll over again." Luke commands me. I roll my eyes and slowly work myself over, yet again.
Two seconds later I'm being rolled again. Not only that, but his hand doesn't go through me once he gets me over. It stays on my shoulder.
"Luke, you're touching me." I whisper. He looks at me with big eyes and whispers
"How..." and suddenly he poofs out, scaring the crap outta me.
"Anne?" Kota wakes up at me jumping.
"Where'd he go!" I frantically sit up, ignoring my screaming muscles.
"The last person he could touch was Julie, it's a touchy subject for him and it doesn't surprise me that he bolted." Reggie explains.
"Oh." I don't push it. Instead I get up, and go to see how Mom is doing after last night. I find her in the kitchen, drinking coffee.
"You're up early." She notes, and I look at the clock. 6:25?! HOW AM I EVEN AWAKE?
"Can we play?" I ask. She grins at me and nods. We head out to the studio and I grab my acoustic. She sits at the piano, and starts by hitting a Am
Laying in the silence,
Waiting for the sirens
Signs, any signs I'm alive stillShe sings. I jump in with the second part, strumming along with the familiar tune.
I don't wanna lose it but
I'm not getting through this
Hey, should I pray,
Should I fray, yeahTo myself, to a god
To a savior who canWe look at each other, breaking into two part harmony, just like we used to before everything changed.
Unbreak the broken
Unsay these spoken words
Find hope in the hopeless
Pull me out of the train wreck
Unburn the ashes
Unchain the reactions now
Not ready to die, not yet
Pull me out of the train wreckMom works the keys as I continue with a
"Pull me out, pull me out, pull me out."All of a sudden there's a thud on the kick drum, making me whip around. Alex is there, giving us a base beat.
Getting through the next verse and chorus is hard, even harder once Reggie hops in on base, both letting me and mom lay out our emotions. You can say what you want
But see I would have died for you,
Oh oh oh oh oh
I'm down on my knees and I need you to be my guard
Be my help
Be a savior who canI go for the belt cause eh, why not. The look on Alex's face is sooo worth it.
Mom and I finish the song, and Alex ends on a final kick.
"YOU CAN SING LIKE THAT?!" Reggie gasps. "ANNE IF I KNEW YOU COULD BELT I WOULD HAVE MADE YOU TRY A CERTAIN SONG BY NOW!" He's not yelling, just overly excitedly talking, running to the table by the couch and grabbing a few sheets of paper.
"Reggie, no. Luke would be so mad!" Alex tries to hint, but Reggie isn't even hearing it.
"She can do it Alex!"
"Reg..." Alex face palms and I know this might not be a good idea, but I'm curious.
"What song?"
"It's a song Luke wrote with Julie but they never sang it together. He's super touchy about people going through his songs." Alex says, pointing at Reggie.
"He left it out on the piano." Reggie shrugs.
"Fair game then." Mom pipes in. Ok, bet.
"Let me see it." Reggie hands it to me, Alex facepalming.
I sit down at the piano with her, as she plays the melody for me. I start humming along, looking for the notes that this was meant to be sung at.
I want to get to know you better
You can tell me all you secrets
Don't hide them from me
Yeah yeah
I want to get to know you better
I'm there for you whenever
You wanna get to know me
'Cause I'm cool with thatThis song seems personal, but at the same time not. I grab my guitar and start strumming along with mom, trying to figure out the melody.
"How does this go?" I ask Reggie. He sings a short line for me and I nod, kinda catching the vibe now.
"Why the hell are you singing Get to Know You." I turn and see Luke furious behind us. Oh crap.
