The sun had barely risen when Subhadra, dressed in a light pink saree adorned with delicate golden embroidery, hurried to the grand entrance of the Dwarka palace. Her heart raced with excitement as she eagerly awaited the arrival of her elder sisters—Devika, Valandhara, Karenumati, and Vijaya.
The cool morning breeze carried the faint sound of conch shells and drums. Subhadra’s eyes lit up as she realized that the royal chariots carrying her sisters were approaching. Moments later, four majestic chariots, each adorned with vibrant flags, arrived at the palace gates. The chariots came to a halt, and one by one, four beautiful princesses stepped down, their faces glowing with joy.
“Jiji!” Subhadra exclaimed, running towards them. Without hesitation, she enveloped all four of her sisters in a warm, tight hug.
“Subhu!” the sisters cried out in unison, their voices brimming with love and excitement as they embraced her.
“Jiji,” Subhadra said, her voice quivering with emotion, “after so many years, you finally remembered me! Do you even know how much I’ve missed all of you?” A lone tear escaped her eye as she held them close.
“Aw, Subhu,” Devika said, wiping her tears gently. “You’re our darling little sister. We missed you just as much! Life isn’t the same without your mischief and laughter.”
“Absolutely!” added Valandhara. “How could we forget you, our Subhu? You’re the heart of our family.”
“Alright, Jiji,” Subhadra said, pulling away with a playful smile, “let’s go inside the palace. There’s so much to talk about!” Grabbing their hands, she led them inside eagerly.
---
Once inside the palace, the sisters greeted the royal family with warmth and affection. Vasudeva and Devaki welcomed them, while Rukmini showered them with love. The palace buzzed with cheerful chatter as the family shared stories and caught up.
But Subhadra had her own plans. After a while, she tugged at her sisters’ arms. “Come on, Jiji, let’s go to my chamber. We have a lot to discuss privately!” she said, grinning mischievously.
The four sisters laughed and followed her to her room. Subhadra’s chamber was a reflection of her vibrant personality—bright curtains, intricately designed vases, and a collection of her favorite weapons displayed on the walls.
---
As soon as they settled, Subhadra began chattering excitedly. “Jiji, do you know? My Pandava brothers visited Dwarka recently! We had so much fun together. Oh, the mischief we caused!”Her sisters listened attentively, but as soon as Subhadra mentioned the Pandavas, their expressions subtly changed. Devika’s heart began to flutter at the thought of Yudhishthira, whose wisdom and calm demeanor had always impressed her. Valandhara’s thoughts wandered to Bhima, imagining his strength and his love for food that matched her own. Karenumati, with her love for beauty, couldn’t help but think of Nakul, the most handsome man in Aryavarta. Vijaya, who admired intelligence, found her thoughts drifting to Sahadeva’s sharp mind.
Subhadra noticed their sudden silence and stopped mid-sentence. She observed her sisters, who seemed lost in their own little dream worlds. A mischievous smile played on her lips.
“Hmm, Jiji,” Subhadra called out, snapping her fingers. “What are you all thinking about?”
The sisters jolted back to reality, realizing they had been caught. Their cheeks turned crimson as they exchanged shy glances. Subhadra burst out laughing, her laughter echoing in the room.
“Wait a moment,” Subhadra teased, narrowing her eyes. “You’re all blushing! Let me guess… you’ve all fallen for the Pandavas, haven’t you?”
The sisters tried to deny it, but their flushed faces betrayed them. Subhadra clapped her hands in delight.
“Alright, let’s see,” she began, pointing at each of them. “Devika Jiji, you admire Dharma so much, and Bhrata Yudhishthira is the epitome of Dharma. No wonder your heart beats for him! Valandhara Jiji, you love food more than anything, and who loves food more than Bhrata Bhima? Karenumati Jiji, you’ve always had an eye for handsome men, and there’s no one more handsome than Bhrata Nakul. And Vijaya Jiji, your admiration for intelligence is well known. Bhrata Sahadeva’s brilliance must have captivated you!”
The sisters’ blushes deepened, confirming Subhadra’s suspicions. She laughed even harder, clapping her hands in triumph.
“Alright, alright,” Karenumati said, her embarrassment giving way to mischief. “You’ve guessed all our love lives, but what about you, Subhu?”
“Yes, tell us!” Valandhara chimed in, her eyes twinkling. “Who is the luckiest man in the world who has captured your heart?”
“What? Luckiest man? Why would anyone who marries me be the luckiest?” Subhadra exclaimed, feigning innocence.
“Because you’re the most beautiful girl in Aryavarta,” Vijaya said matter-of-factly. “You’re a fierce warrior princess who knows how to wield weapons. Anyone who marries you will be truly fortunate.”
Subhadra blushed at her sisters’ praise, but before she could change the topic, Devika leaned forward with a mischievous glint in her eye. “Wait a minute! You didn’t call Arjuna Bhrata like you did with the others. You called him ‘Prince Arjuna.’ Why is that, Subhu?”
Subhadra’s face turned scarlet, and she stammered, “N-no… nothing like that, Jiji! Why would I love Prince Arjuna?”
Her sisters exchanged knowing glances, their smiles widening.
“Oh, we see it now,” Vijaya teased. “You’ve been calling him ‘Prince,’ haven’t you? That’s because he’s your prince charming!”
Karenumati joined in, giggling. “Don’t try to hide it, Subhu. Your face is as red as a pomegranate!”
“Alright, admit it!” Valandhara said, pretending to interrogate her. “You’ve fallen for Pandupautra Arjuna, haven’t you?”
Subhadra buried her face in her hands, unable to hide her embarrassment. Her sisters burst into laughter, thoroughly enjoying teasing their youngest sibling.
“You all have taken a pledge to pull my legs, haven’t you?” Subhadra exclaimed, finally looking up.
“Subhu, we’re just stating the truth,” Devika teased. “Besides, we haven’t said anything bad about your beloved Prince Arjuna.”
“Enough!” Subhadra shouted, getting up. “I won’t spare you all today!”
Her sisters screamed playfully and ran around the room, with Subhadra chasing them. The chamber filled with laughter, their playful banter echoing through the palace.
---
After some time, they collapsed onto the cushions, breathless but happy. Subhadra looked at her sisters and smiled. “I’m so glad you all are here. I missed this so much.”
“We missed you too, Subhu,” Devika said, pulling her into a hug. “No matter how far apart we are, the bond we share will always bring us back together.”
The sisters nodded in agreement, their hearts full of love for one another. For that moment, nothing else mattered—not their kingdoms, not their responsibilities, not even the men they admired. They were simply five sisters, reunited and happy in each other’s company.
