The screams around her were deafening. She wanted nothing more than to cover her ears and ignore them but she couldn't, the yells of her family were too loud.
She outstretched her hand to grab onto them to stop them from being ripped away from her but her efforts were as successful as if she was trying to catch smoke.
The desperate tell of the men, and women, that for her whole life she regarded as the toughest people she knew were stopped short as the police restrained them against the oak staircase.
A noise as loud as a gunshot became clearer to the girl, she didn't realise what it was at first but then she registered it as her own screams, louder than any other in the hall.
She wanted it all to stop, what was happening to her family, the noises, the chaos...life...but she wouldn't let this break her not when she had and would in the future survive much worse.
As her family was dragged away and she could do nothing but watch a feeling settled over her, it was a feeling she had long thought she had gotten rid of, why did she need to feel that way when her life, as chaotic and dangerous as it was to the outside world fulfilled.
She should be grateful, others would curse her to have what she had, money, family, independence to a certain extent, a prospect of a carer, to own her own money, her life to the outside was perfect a thing to be jealous of. One should never judge a book by its cover though.
But yet as the police vans drove away and she stood on the gravel, the chill of the bitter wind making the hairs on her arms stand and an unforgiving shiver to continuously rip through her body, as she stood away from the brother who had caused all this, an overwhelming sense of loneliness tightened around her heart and refused to let go.
