"Two pound on Silver Lining."
Molly looked at the desperate man with a slight raised eyebrow, she had seen many men like this one come in the shop before and knew better than to argue but really a please wouldn't go a miss. She took the money and handed him a betting slip all without saying a word.
The words Molly had spoken that morning she could count on one hand. She looked around the shop miffed before taking more money from more desperate men. John had dragged her up from her peaceful sleep as the sun was just rising to stick her down the den without as much as an explanation before disappearing.
The morning was meant to be spent working on the car, Molly had nearly finished and was excited to but instead she was here amongst drunk and desperate men and Peaky Blinders who kept an eye on her every move to report back to her brothers. The only good thing about working in the betting den was that she was getting paid five pounds for the day.
Molly took more money in exchange for betting slips. Bored in waiting for the next man she looked over at Tommy's office to see his icy blue eyes watching her, to no doubt make sure she was behaving.
She gave him a little wave which made him roll his eyes, but the corner of his lips twitched up, she turned back just in time to serve the next man waiting at her desk.
"Last bet's now!" Scudboat yelled from the desk next to Molly's.
Since there were no more men lining up to place bets at her desk Molly kicked her feet up onto it - something she had seen Arthur do many times.
"That's your starters gentlemen. No more bets."
Molly watched as a man approached Scudboat's desk trying to place a bet even though the races had begun "I got a tip off, I need this bet" he pleaded.
"The race has started" Scudboat repeated.
"Please."
"No!"
"Fine!" The man exclaimed knocking a bag of coins off the desk in Molly's direction, a rogue coin landed in her lap.
The man quickly had half a dozen Peaky men on him and with a clear promise of violence hanging in the air the man retreated.
Molly wasn't surprised that the day's betting had ended in near violence, it was excepted, she picked up the shilling that had landed in her lap and twirled in between her fingers.
"Hand it over" Tommy said suddenly appearing by her side holding his hand palm up.
"I weren't gonna keep it" she replied pacing it firmly in his hand "why would I need a shilling if your gonna pay me five pounds."
"Ah so that's what John said he'd pay ya" Tommy replied.
"Yep."
Without complaint Tommy reached into his pocket and handed his sister a number of notes.
