PRESENT

The Pogue crew had kept their promise, dropping Avery off a few houses away from hers.

The rest of the group stayed in the van with John B swatting Pope's hand away when he tried to change the music, JJ slipping away to walk the brunette the rest of the way back. Avery had tried to stop him, knowing that it wouldn't end well if her dad saw him, but he promised to be extra careful and insisted he come along, not giving her the chance to say no.

The green eyed girl went along with it, knowing how persistent the boy could be and feeling as though she owed him this at least. She would be lying if she said that it didn't make her giddy to know that he was still willing to be with her after everything they'd been through, but she couldn't allow herself to relish in it either. He didn't deserve to be hanging onto her every word, especially not now when she was struggling with even looking at herself in the mirror without wanting to break it.

She didn't want him to know just how big of a mess she became.

JJ cleared his throat, scratching at the back of his ear awkwardly as he tried to think up ways to start a conversation with the girl walking next to him. He never had to be this cautious with her since it would typically be easy to talk about everything and anything with her, but there was a barrier between them now. All he wanted to do was find out what had her acting so differently from the girl he met last summer, to hold her in his arms and listen, but it was the one topic she made clear wasn't an option.

Well, he wasn't one to follow rules anyway.

"Avery," he spoke up when they were near her house, his heart skipping in his chest as she turned to look at him with a questioning look swimming in her emerald green eyes. "Can I get some sort of clue or something on when we'll be able to talk?"

She sighed, averting her gaze away from him as she crossed her arms. "JJ-"

"I know you don't want to talk about it," he cut her off before she could protest, reaching out to grasp her shoulders and stop her from walking so they could face each other. "But we got to, Avery."

"We don't, actually," she retorted, though she made no move to step away from his grip as she stared up at him with a firm gaze. "You don't have to deal with this, J."
