As we made our way across the muddy grass, I noticed there was a lot of yelling and fighting going on at David's house.

My initial thought was that he did have little children, and that I wasn't going to be having any sleep ins anytime soon, but as we came closer to his house I realized that his sons looked to be around 17, the same age as me but they sounded like 4 year olds.

Boys, I thought as  David brought me into his garage where his family were sitting on what appears to be a lounge and I lowered and closed my umbrella and looked everywhere except the family in front of me.

"Everyone" David started "This is Amelia. She lives across the road from us and I want you to introduce yourselves and make her feel at home."

I felt my cheeks burn a crimson red as all eyes settled on me and I heard David clear his throat expectantly and almost as if on cue, his wife jumped up from the couch and pulled me into a massive bear hug and I swear I heard my back crack. Damn she was strong.

I was shocked at how open and welcoming she was, I mean, I could be a serial killer or something!

I awkwardly stood there with my arms pinned to my sides as she pulled away with a massive kilowatt smile on her face, so I tried to return the favour with a smile but I bet I looked like a drowned cat.

"Oh dearie you're freezing! You shouldn't be outside in this weather you'll get sick!" she scolded, reminding me of how my mother used to tell me off when I was a child and it made me break out into a toothy grin.

"It's not that bad ma'am. I perfectly fine" I assured smiling, trying my best to keep my teeth from chattering against each other.

I felt someone drape a leather jacket over me and when I turned to see who it was, it was one of David's sons but when he saw me looking at him he cleared his throat and retreated to the back wall of the dusty garage instead of sitting back down.

"Thank you, but I really am fine." I spoke insistently. These people were very kind and all, but I didn't know if I could trust them yet.

In seconds I found myself inhaling the scent of the jacket and for some reason, the smell made me feel safe.

What on earth was I doing? Inhaling a scent? What am I, a dog?  But it just smelt so damn good, like smoke but a little sweeter with a hint of musk. I really am going insane, inhaling my neighbours scent...and liking it.

"No you're not" he said sharply, looking straight at me. "You're only just stopping your teeth from chattering and that alone is enough to lead me to believe that you're going to get sick"

My heart lurched. My stomach dropped and palms became clammy. His eyes stared into mine, his gaze softening for the quickest of seconds before it became a blank slate again.

I could hear my heart thumping in my ear and I felt butterflies in my stomach. It felt like I was having a heart attack and I felt those piercing green eyes drink in every inch of my face and that's when I heard my subconscious whisper something sweetly in the back of my mind .
