~Jesper POV~
Yes! We finally docked in Berth 33, and I can get off this stupid boat! I need to go play the Makker's Wheel, hang out at the Slat, shoot something, heck, I would even take being chased by the ENTIRE city, I'm so boooored. As soon as the Argo II is tied down, Inej races off the boat, and I'm not far behind her, as the crows and the demigods make our way to the Slat, that lopsided, saintsforsaken building that had somehow wormed its way into our hearts and, in some ways, become home.
When we reached the doors of the Slat, Specht was on duty, and Inej was waiting for us.
"Jesper!?"
"The one and only!" and we 'bro hugged' as I was one of the few tall enough to do so.
"Where have you guys been!? And if Kaz has dragged you into another job like the Ice Court without telling us, I'm going to kill him." Specht elbowed me playfully, which felt like a sucker punch to the side.
"Actually, Kaz is the reason why we left," out of the corner of my eye, I saw Inej's breath hitch, "about 2 months ago, he disappeared, and not even the Wraith here could find him, so we went to Ravka to talk to an old friend of Kaz's."
"Hold on, has all that time in Ravka addled the few brain cells you have left?" he asked me with a time out motion, "Kaz Brekker doesn't have friends, he has business partners, gang members - maybe," he replied with a sly glance at Inej, "a girlfriend - but friends? Nope. Probably doesn't even know the meaning of the word."
That comment stung a little, as I had been jealous for years of how much Kaz seemed to trust Inej - as much as someone like Kaz could trust anyone - but I tried not to let it show.
"Do you know where he is?"
Specht grimaced and Inej looked ready to hurl.
"I know all right, everyone does. He's doing a job for that old crone, the peacock herself; told us not to come after 'im."
"He's what!?" and Inej curled up into a ball muttering to herself. Of course, we all knew that Inej had been practically enslaved there before Kaz had bought her, but those scars would be there forever. I quickly knelt down to comfort her but at my touch she curled further into a ball, rocking back and forth.
"Saints, what's wrong with her!?" shouted Specht, eyes widening.
"She came from the Menagerie, remember! Umm, wait, leather! Grab leather!" I yelled at him.
"What!? How is LEATHER going to help right now, she's gonna have a panic attack in the middle of the Barrel! The Razorgulls and the Blacktips will skin her alive!"
"Just find some leather, use Kaz's gloves!"
"Forget the Razorgulls, KAZ will skin us alive!!!
"JuSt Do It SpEcHt!"
"Fine, but if Kaz asks, it's Inej's fault, agreed?" he asks, glancing around fearfully.
"Definitely," I reply with a fake grin plastered on my face as he runs inside, Inej is like a sister to me and I hate to see her in pain.
-----Line Break-----
Specht finally came back.
"Do you have them?" he holds up a pair of black gloves which I instantly recognize as Kaz's.
