The next few days passed indiscriminately...
Once they had gotten home Mrs. Weasley cried for what seemed like hours, first over how she had yelled at Fred and George, then how disturbing it must have been for poor Harry, and finally she was brought onto another bout of sobbing when Mr. Weasley accidentally reminded her that Hermione and y/n were muggle born.
The boys and Ginny spent almost all their time practicing Quidditch moves, while Hermione and y/n stood starstruck in front of their new reading lists. Mrs. Weasley had already gone to Diagon Alley while everyone else was at the game, and Hermione was poring over her own books and then leafing through y/n's.
"You know you don't have to know this stuff for two more years right?" Y/N pulled her Advanced Arithmacy book out from the pile and handed it to Hermione.
"How are you not obsessed with this stuff?! It's literal magic, y/n"
Y/N rolled her eyes, looking back down to the school list.
"What are 'dress robes'? I mean sure they're probably just fancy robes but why are they on our list this year?"
"Maybe the Minister of Magic is coming down for a dinner! Or maybe they're going to teach us about high wizarding society! Or maybe...." Hermione droned on, listing possibilities for the need of dress robes. Out of the corner of her eye, y/n saw the red puff of Mrs. Weasley's hair.
"Mrs. Weasley? What are dress robes?"
"Oh dear! They are very fancy robes for special occasions, although I believe the list actually recommended black-tie dresses for female student, so I didn't pick any up for you too... I was hoping you could take Ginny and Hermione dress shopping tomorrow, y/n"
"Uh, sure! Sounds good to me, but what is it for?"
"Dresses and suits, eh?" Hermione said, "Maybe it IS high wizarding society! Like a prom!"
"Secret prom? I doubt it. Regardless, we should get Ginny and get ready to go shopping."
The next day Hermione, Ginny, and y/n set off to Diagon Alley. Shockingly Madame Malkin's store was filled with expensive dresses and dozens of shoppers. The girls ran into a few other girls from Gryffindor, but mostly just friends of friends. Ginny had picked out ten or so enormous ballgowns to try on, and was insisting Hermione do the same. While they ran around the shop, y/n noticed a beautiful black sleeveless dress. There was only one left on the shelf among the garish pinks and greens, and y/n thought she might as well try it on, right? Just as she was reaching for it, another hand pulled it off the shelf.
"Angelina!"
"Y/N!"
"It's been ages, how are you!"
"I'm okay, how are you?"
"I'm perfect. Pretty dress don't you think?"
"Gorgeous! You should have it, I saw you had your eye on it."
"No! I couldn't!" Y/N hesitated. It was more Angelina's size, but magic tailoring made that not important... Now that Angelina had it, she really wanted it...
"Oh, girls, I think I have one more in the back if you'd like!" Madame Malkin swished over to the two girls before popping into the back room and pulling out a matching dress.
"Angie, you don't mind wearing matching dresses do you?"
"You can't even tell, and besides there will be so many people there it won't be a big deal"
