This is all Mari has ever known. As a member of the Noduin wanderers, Mari wants to know what is beyond the Ash Wastes, if there are lands where the sky is blue and if there are great and tall "trees" that can grow as large as the volcanoes in the Wastes.
But when her father decides to marry her off to a man in their company - as cruel as their environment - she decides to take matters into her own hands. The Ash Wastes are a cruel place, but Mari is determined to survive.
