Aiken, South Carolina 1983. David Hudson should be out making friends, but he isn't. He is struggling with the nightmare world and creatures of Purgatory, 3rd grade, and finding his own identity. But his life changes when a family friend gives him a gem that transforms outwardly appearing humans into angels or hellions and discovers his grandad, Dr. Johnson is a Seraph. Unbeknownst to them, Lord Fulcier (UNK), the self-appointed ruler of Purgatory has different plans for David. He dispatches two groups to seize and bring him there. The first group is an army of hellions, traversing Purgatory towards a portal that opens every 150 years. The second group is the dysfunctional Des Moines family impersonating humans. Abaddon aka Don, a handsome antiquities dealer and absentee father. His companions are his Lily, Adam's prideful first wife, and Amii, a timid fallen cherub. After Grandad discovers he is a Seraph, he is drawn to the university library, where he and David meet Ms. Sophia Topperwine and Madeline. Who David senses aren't quite human. Sophia explains she and grandad have a kinship, and he needs to find his sword to restore his memories, thus causing him to question his own identity and relationship with his wife Delilah Johnson. David begins school and meets Lily and Amii who are impersonating 10-year-old twins. Everything is going smoothly until Abigail Wright. Their teacher hears Lily speaking Latin and senses something is off about her but is unsure. Until David accidently reveals Lily's true form. During a skating party David's mother Peggy meets Don and an innocent relationship kindles. Abigail becomes part of the secret group of hero's trying to understand the gem's origins, Fulcier's ultimate plan, and how to destroy the Des Moines family before time runs out. All the while the army marches closer to its destination, and Lord Fulcier continues to pull the strings, preparing for the final battle with his brother Michael.
