A short story (500 words) inspired by Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale." In the near future, rations are no longer used as a method to conserve food.

To live by the Rule is not always easy.

You could die. You could die from the day you were born to the day just before you die. Anytime before and after, you were certainly not alive. The cosmic irony that we all can never understand is that the point of our lives was to live and then to die. And death is the greatest retribution. Lemontree Aragona was conceived on June 5th in the future. She is the sixth generation of the Cornucopia, an exclusively bred class of people that live in Nova Leviathan that once was Russia until the Nuclear War. For these children, there was no time before that war, that was the beginning of them and the end of the past.

Dianah wants to keep her baby but she has committed the greatest sin in a society that values female virginity above all else. Now she and her mother must face the consequences of her actions.

Women were seen as child bearing incubators; Slaves to the higher power But, no more. Carla, is unlike any other slaves. She falls in love with her master, to which is forbidden and punishable by death. Not only, will they be risking their lives, but the life of the unborn child, who has yet to know the world outside of the womb. ( The cover is based of off the book the maidens tale because, the story is similar in terms of women being treated, and the fertility issue but nothing more)
