"Where were you?" I asked Nabiha quietly.

She looked like she was in a goth phase, with ripped black leggings, a mini black skirt and a practically sleeveless t-shirt. I could barely look in her direction. Sister or not, I had way too much respect for females.

Anaya must have noticed my discomfort, because she went out and returned with a shawl for Nabiha to drape over her legs.

"I needed time and space to myself." Nabiha replied. "I had to figure things out."

"So, where did you stay?" I asked.

"With Mum." She replied simply. "She found herself a new beau, and I was basically left on my own for hours, sometimes days."

"You went back to her?" I raised an eyebrow.

"She's my mother, Bhai!"

I exchanged a look with Anaya, before turning back to face her. "You could have called us, messaged us. Rida and I had been worried sick about you."

"I'm sorry." She gave a one-shouldered shrug, almost as if she was just apologising for the sake of it, and not from the heart. She looked up. "Mum's gone away for her honeymoon with the new hubby, and I was all alone at home. I sort of ran out of money and food..." She paused. "I was just wondering if I can stay here for just a few days."

"I..." I had just opened my mouth to reply when we heard Aizah's squeal from outside. It seemed like Mamma had bought the twins back. Anaya immediately got up and headed out into the foyer.

A few moments later, she and Mamma walked in, holding a twin each.

"Assalam Alaikum, Mamma." I stood up, taking Farhaan from my wife and giving him a kiss on the cheek.

"Walaikum Assalam." Mamma looked at Nabiha almost cautiously.

"Assalam Alaikum." Nabiha stood up, the shawl dropping to the floor. She immediately reached for it and sat back down, covering her legs.

"Walaikum Assalam." Mamma replied again, as Aizah yanked away at her necklace, trying to pull it free.

"Aizah, chanda, no." I walked forward and took my daughter in my other arm.

After noticing Aizah's addiction to the moon, I'd started calling her my little chanda (moon/moonlight). Being in my arms, my girl started squealing happily and uncontrollably, which set Farhaan off into a fit of giggles.

"Nabiha, all of a sudden?" Mamma asked me.

"She wants a place to stay for a few days." I explained. "So she came to us."

Mamma's lips pursed together, and she remained silent for a few seconds. "If you want a place to stay, Nabiha, you can come to my place."

I look at Mamma, surprised.

"Your Bhai needs space and privacy for his own family now." My mother continued, pointedly. She didn't want Nabiha to stay with us. I'm not sure why, but she seemed to really dislike the idea.
