"Paanch Nand?! Tumhare sabr ka imtehaan to ab shuru hoga, babe." Kiran had jokingly said as she laughed when I'd told her about Faiz's family sending over a marriage proposal for me.
*"Five Nands? The test of your patience will start now, babe."
Kiran was either psychic, or it was silly to expect that I was going to have a perfect, problem-free life with five Nands.
"You have no right to talk to him like that." I was glaring at Rumi. I kept my voice low because Farhaan and Aizah were present in the room, and I didn't want to startle them. "After everything that he has done for you, this is how you thank him?!"
Rumi blinked, probably not expecting me to speak up. This is what happens when you don't occasionally speak up to set your limits: people think that they can do whatever they like and you won't do a thing about it.
"Anaya, I apologise on her behalf." Mamma spoke up.
I turned to face her. "No, Mamma. She's old enough to know better. Even Mikael knows how to be grateful to someone who has done something nice for them, and here Rumaisa is accusing Faiz of being selfish, just because for once he spent some time away with his family." I turned back to face Rumi. "And trust me, if I had been a stereotypical Bhabi, things would have changed a long time ago."
"Mamma broke her leg!" Rumi argued with me. "He should have left everything and come back to her. And you know what? Before marriage, that's exactly what he would have done!"
This seriously p***ed me off, excuse the language. I was actually trembling with rage right now. How dare she? "Firstly, this matter has been discussed between us and Mamma, so it's better if you don't speak about it unless we've asked your opinion on this. Secondly, you have absolutely no right to accuse Faiz of changing after marriage! There's a lot I can also complain about, Rumi, but I don't. And you know why? Because I am grateful for everything that Faiz has done for me!"
He wasn't speaking. I think he was a little stunned to hear his little sister talk about him like that, and why shouldn't he be? He literally does everything and anything to take care of his family, even taking extra and unnecessary measures to make sure that they are happy and comfortable. I could tell that he was hurt, and that was intolerable for me.
"I was a new bride, new to this country." I said, in almost a whisper. "I needed him more than ever. He was, and is, my biggest support. But despite being newly married, he was always helping his family with one issue or another. I never complained, and I'm still not complaining because I know what you all mean to him." I glared at her. "And if I wanted, Rumaisa, I could have lived a separate life with him, because even Islam gives me the right to ask my husband for a separate home. But I didn't, because I love you all like you're my own family. But for once, when Faiz and I thought about our own family, he is being accused of being selfish."
"Let's go, Anaya." Faiz said, quietly.
I looked at him, surprised.
"I'm going to make one thing very clear to you, Rumaisa." He warned her. "Do not say a word against Anaya ever again. What I have done for you, it was my duty. But she had no duty towards anyone but me and our kids, yet she has still handled all responsibilities without a word of complaint." He leaned down and picked Farhaan up. "I'll keep checking in on you, Mamma. Allah Hafiz." He kissed her forehead.
