Warnings: some angst, lots of fluff
You sighed and collapsed on Vanya's couch with a groan. "So nothing," you concluded, staring at the ceiling as exhaustion threatened to steal you away.
"A whole day of searching and you guys found nothing?" Vanya asked incredulously, leaning against the wall in her pajamas as Five made a beeline for the coffee pot.
"If we'd found something we wouldn't be here," he said flatly, clearly not in the mood for conversation.
You closed your eyes for a beat, then opened them again and gave Vanya a shrug. "Mind if we crash here?"
She shrugged right back and gestured to her empty living room. "Nobody else is using it. I have a lesson at 10 tomorrow, so you've gotta be gone by then."
"We'll be out well before that," Five promised, leaning against the counter with a red Solo cup of coffee in his hands. You wondered how it didn't burn his skin, but he still took a sip of the steaming drink without flinching. "We've got things to do."
You winced at the thought of another early morning spent hunting for a nonexistent clue on how to stop the end of the world.
"Well, if there's anything you need, uh, help yourself, or come get me if you need something." Vanya gave the two of you a small smile and an awkward wave before heading into her bedroom. You heard the door click shut behind her as you leaned back into the worn couch cushions, closing your eyes and trying to take a breath.
You felt the couch cushions shift as Five sat down beside you. Almost instantly, your nose was overwhelmed by the scent of coffee.
You let your head turn lazily in his direction as you forced your eyes open. He was staring straight ahead, sipping his caffeine, his shoulder pressed against yours. It was about the most affection he'd ever show, aside from simple hand-holding, and even then, that was strictly reserved for perilous situations.
He awkwardly cleared his throat and you sighed, sitting up and leaning forward to mimic his position. "So what next?" you mumbled, stifling a yawn.
He glanced at you and you could have sworn a small smile graced his lips as he brushed a strand of your hair back from your eyes. "For you, sleep."
Indignation burned in you and you shifted, glaring at him. "I'm not tired," you snapped, though you knew it was a weak argument. You were practically unconscious less than a minute ago.
"You're exhausted," he said said flatly, turning away from you and taking a sip of his coffee. "Get some rest, I'll figure something out."
"I'm not sleeping while you work all the way through the night," you protested, shouldering him playfully. He hummed in response, already deep in thought, so you sighed and dropped your head onto his shoulder. "With no supervision you'll stay up all night and be exhausted tomorrow. And I do not want to deal with a sleep-deprived Five Hargreeves."
He glanced at you and risked a small smile, letting his head drop down against yours. "I've pulled all-nighters before, I've worked from sundown to sunset and been able to function perfectly fine."
"You say that but every time is different," you mumbled, closing your eyes. "One time you might be fine and then you're not and you're not fine ... ."
"You're not making any sense," he told you with a grin, pressing a kiss to your temple. He only did this when you were either asleep or, like this, almost asleep so you wouldn't remember what had happened in the morning. "Get some sleep."
"Only if you do," you mumbled, lifting your head to meet his eyes. "There's enough room for us both."
His cheeks flushed, but you were so tired you barely noticed. "Lemme get the light."
