Warnings: angst, minor cussing, failing relationship
You and Five had fallen asleep watching a movie, cuddled up with your head against his chest. You remembered the way his fingers had combed lazily through your hair, brushing against your scalp, until the pair of you had fallen asleep on the couch.
You were pretty sure his siblings had snuck in to take a few pictures of you. At least, you wouldn't put it past them.
When you woke up, though, Five was gone.
Sighing, you sat up and stretched, shivering and pulling the blanket around yourself.
"You seen lover boy lately?" a familiar voice asked from the bar. You turned to see Klaus perched on one of the barstools. He shrugged and added, "Just wondering. Saw him last night, but he was gone when I woke up."
"Yeah, same," you mumbled, running a hand through your hair and yawning. "Probabling running some errand or something. He's always busy," you added bitterly.
Klaus leaned forward. "Relationship troubles sweetheart?"
"Do you know your own brother?" you asked drily.
"'Course I do, but then again, he did disappear for sixteen years, four months and fourteen days," Klaus said calmly. "But he also seems exactly like the type of person that would drive a girl like you crazy."
"Klaus," you said in a warning tone, not in the mood to have this conversation.
"I'm just sayin'! He's always off doing something, like saving the world or some math problem or practicing his powers or making out with a mannequin-"
"Okay that last one never actually happens," you said quickly, a blush creeping to your cheeks.
"Right, he makes out with you," Klaus said, easily covering up the mistake. "So forget that last one. But the others, you can't deny, he spends hardly any time with you, Y/N."
"We watched Iron Man last night," you pointed out, though doubt was already taking root in your mind.
"It's the first time the two of you had been alone in weeks! Don't deny it, I know you want to," Klaus said, getting up and grabbing his coat from the entryway. "But it's true. I just want you to be happy, Y/N, you're like my little sister. And I don't think Five is giving that to you right now."
With that, he left.
You sighed and sank into the couch. As much as you hated to admit it, Klaus had a point, and his words were slowly sinking into your skull, pounding a relentless beat of bitter resentment against your brain. Last night really had been the first time the two of you had been alone together, in quite a while. It was the first time you could remember since your first kiss that Five had looked at you with love and kindness in his eyes, the first time that he'd held you close to his chest in a non-life-threatening situation. The thought had crossed your mind the night before, but you'd pushed it away in order to be happy with him.
But maybe Klaus was right. Maybe Five wasn't giving you happiness that you told yourself he was.
You swallowed and snuggled down into the couch cushions, hoping that they'd give off warmth, but all they really gave off was cold.

It was late into the night when Five made a reappearance.
He burst into the house in a flurry of blue light, and straightened his jacket before making his way purposefully to the bar, where he poured himself a glass of whiskey and sat down to relieve himself of the day's work.
"Thought you'd be back earlier."
He turned around, startled, to see you standing by the fireplace, almost exactly where he had jumped into the house. You were wrapped in one of Allison's too-small robes, little white flowers embroidered on its teal fabric standing out in the darkness.
"Things happened," he said with a shrug, turning back to the bar. Your heart sank at how nonchalant he was. Did he remember nothing from the night before? Did he not care? Were you just another person in his mind, another useless child that constantly needed saving?
Anger bubbled up inside of you. "What the hell, Five? You really are a selfish idiot, you know that?!?"
That made him turn around. "What?"
You swallowed your anger and regained your composure, refusing to make yourself look like the very child you dreaded being. "Do you remember nothing? Do you not remember how we laid there together, watching that movie, how you played with my hair and how happy you were? How happy I was? You just got up and left! You didn't even say goodbye!"
"Y/N, there were things to do-"
"Then tell me! Tell me what things there were to do! Let me help you, Five! I could help you! I know I don't have powers, but I'm not useless! And if it's so dangerous," you added when he opened his mouth to protest, "Then why don't you say goodbye before you just get up and leave me? In case something happens to you and I end up not seeing you again."
He gnawed on his lip and stared at you, unsure of what to do. He never had been one that thrived in socially awkward or pressing situations. "You'd be killed like a mouse by a cat," he said finally, and it was the wrong thing to say.
That was the limit for you. "The only reason you haven't been in because of your powers! I could lose you in the blink of an eye, Five! It happened once, to your family, years ago, what makes you think that it won't happen again?! This world isn't exactly the most predictable thing!" You took a deep breath and steeled yourself, preparing for him to yell at you, but when he didn't you decided to continue. "Do you remember when we kissed? The first time?"
A blush crept into his face and he looked away. "Yeah."
"You told me you'd be there, you told me not to worry about you because no matter what, you'd always come back! You said FOREVER! And lately it's been becoming harder and harder to believe that you really meant forever, Five. You're never there for me, you come home covered in blood if you come home at all, and even then you always distant and once you're patched up your back on the battlefield, getting yourself hurt again. You're not there for me."
You wanted him to say something, anything, that showed he still cared. Just a kind smile and an "I'm sorry, Y/N" would show that deep down, he did love you, he did care, and everything else had just been a facade.
He didn't say anything.
He didn't even look at you as you pulled your robe tighter around yourself and headed back up the stairs.
