warnings: fluff, that's literally it

At some point, you and Five ended up making you way out of the crowd and out to the balcony that overlooked the city. It was the Hargreeves' annual New Year's Eve party, with Allison's family, Diego's friends, Vanya's students, Klaus's rehab buddies, and other friends of the family packing into the mansion to drink and laugh and dance until the new year.

The noise became too much for Five, and you'd followed him as he slipped out of the crowd and out to the balcony. It was no secret that it was ... a little much for him. Four decades all alone, and then coming back to this? A mob of screaming people? It would be a lot for anyone.

Not to mention that he was probably frustrated that his family had seemed to move on so well without him. They'd all found new families, made new friends, and he had nobody.

Except you, of course.

"The city's nice," you mumbled, nudging him so he'd follow your gaze out across the quiet yet glowing city. "It's pretty."

"Yeah," he agreed, unable to keep himself from watching you out of the corner of his eye. The way your eyelashes fluttered when you blinked, your hair drifting in the slight breeze, the way you pressed your shoulder to his ... he just loved you. Loved everything about you.

And tonight was the night to tell you.

He cleared his throat, stiffening when you dropped your head onto his shoulder, faltering for a moment before saying, "It's almost midnight."

"Uh huh."

"Anything ... anything you're hoping for? In the new year?"

You lifted your eyes to meet his. "Yeah, one little thing." Just as quickly as your gaze rose, it fell back down to the city. "Probably won't happen, though."

He could hear his family start the countdown from inside, but neither of you made a move to join them. "What is it?"

You stood upright, your face perilously close to his. From inside, "FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO" could be heard, and just as they got to one-

Five went for it.

He pressed his lips to yours, closing his eyes and praying to a god he didn't believe in for you to do the same. For a moment, you were frozen from shock, and he was about to pull back and teleport out of there when your hand cupped his cheek and you kissed him back.

"HAPPY NEW YEAR!"

At the exclamation, Five pulled away from you, searching your eyes to make sure you were being sincere and not just kissing him to keep from hurting his feelings.

Your eyes were glowing, and you dropped your hand from his cheek, averting your gaze. "We should kiss more often," you mumbled.

A grin broke out across his face. "Yeah, we should."

And you did.
