"Hide and seek, you've never heard of it? It's not even a Kurta originated game!" The youthful, bright boy giggled. Y/n, being about only a year or so younger than him, stammered a bit. She had just been introduced to the Kurta tribe. Her mother, whom she had not really seen her entire life until now, had pulled some strings with the clan leader to allow y/n to stay with her, and travel with the Kurta. She was half-Kurta herself, after all. "This is just a way to get me to loosen up, isn't it? Why are you being so nice to me?" You said, sort of defensively. The boy paused, then smiled, "My question first, y/n." He paused a bit, then continued, "Y/n, why did you allow me to die? Why did you allow yourself to join the troupe, even after we all took you in, and kindly, as well??" Y/n's conscious between her physical world and dream universe had seemed to bend together, y/n could not describe it even after she woke up, all you knew was that these dreams visited you frequently, and they never got old.
Sweat ran down your temples, and your shirt was uncomfortable with heavy moisture. You stabilized yourself on the swiftly rocking hammock, waking up so abruptly caused the rickety hammock to swing. Y/n gathered herself, and looked around the room.
Ha, how ironic, you thought to yourself after realizing that no one was in the room, and you had slept in.
What time is it? The captain told us we should be arriving today. I couldn't have woken up so late that I missed the boat docking, that wouldn't happen until the afternoon, holy shit. You let out a contempt sigh after you overheard the voices of your peers, who had not after all, started off for the hunter exams without you, the people you heard on the boat where the only people who didn't get completely torn away by the boats abnormal rocking patterns. You would never admit it yourself, but you didn't blame them, you yourself actually almost vomited, in fact, you still felt like you very much could, even now. But was that because of the dream I just had or because of this damn boat? You thought to yourself. The people who had surrendered to the violent waves of the ocean were not able to continue onto the hunter exams, said by the captain.
The only victors who would be able to proceed was a boy, maybe about 11 or 12, whose name was Gon, he wasn't very hard to forget, not at all actually, he made himself very present. You gathered enough to know that he was planning to attend the hunter exams because of his determination to find his dad, but although you knew that much, you still didn't know enough about him. For a young, loud, child, he was hard to figure out, and wasn't very predictable as he looked. Next, an old, middle aged man, who was actually the guy who you found snoring behind the boxes when you first entered the boat. Mr. Leorio, that was his name. Although, most of the time all you could remember was MISTER, he made himself very clear on that. He, unlike Gon, was very simple to read. From the get-go, he made his motives clear also, he wanted money. That's why he wanted a hunter's license, because with it he could become a doctor and accumulate even more money that way. Did he really though? When you looked at him for extended periods of time, observed him, carefully, you noticed there was something that seemed more sentimental to him, what it was however, you had no clue.
Not too long ago, Leorio had picked a fight with a very quiet boy, y/n found this quite amusing, because only Leorio could get himself in a fight with the person on the boat who spoke the less. Since you weren't there when the fight had broken out, apparently, according to Gon's story telling trajectory, the future doctor had gotten into a fight with a boy, about your age, named Kurapika, over the premise that Kurapika didn't use the prefix "Mr." to refer to him. Besides that, there wasn't much else that you knew, except now that Mr. Leorio wasn't mad at him anymore and hysterical enough, they were now aquatinted.
Taking just a few more steps, y/n lost in her thinking process, she heard the silent boy say in a slightly-judge mental voice, "Up this late, y/n? I considered leaving you here on the boat, no one could pass the hunter exam by sleeping through half of it." The sheer nerve he had made you automatically feel a sharp seer dance up and down your body, however, you "played-it-cool." You chuckled, "Are you missing me already?" Silence, he didn't respond, he just turned away, his blond hair swinging with him, and his eyes only staring ahead. After the satisfaction of leaving Kurapika supposedly speechless sunk in, you thought, does he think I hate him? But you felt like you hated no one you had met on the boat, all were individuals whom you felt gravitated to, connected to, in some twisted way.
Taking your first steps off of the boat and into the bright sunlight made you feel fully awake, and the captain began to speak.
"Dolle Harbor, it's where we are, the map of where to go is right over there, should lead over to Zaban City." He pointed to the laminated poster pasted on some sort of board, Leorio and Kurapika made their way over as it, but Gon stuck around behind, he somehow read the captain, as you had, and felt it obvious he wanted to speak with the boy. You knew the "boat-leader" and taken a liking to Gon, in a friendly way, and felt that their conversation should stay personal, so you headed towards the map where Kurapika and Leorio stood contemplating.
"I advise you follow that cedar tree at the top of the hill behind the city, it will lead you precisely to the hunter exam site." She couldn't help overhearing, sheer instinct and her history of brutal training with the phantom troupe wouldn't let her. Y/n noticed a problem in the captains statement though, that cedar tree led the opposite way of Zaban City, her eyes fled rapidly back to the map, as if she missed a key point, and the captain was just telling Gon what was on the map, but she was still right. And she knew, once Gon told them about his conversation with the captain, they would have to choose. They only had two obvious options, they would either follow the map, or follow the direction of the man who transported them. They couldn't split up either, because whoever went the wrong way would have, seemingly, no other way of contact.
Hey ywalls..... If you're still reading I am so sorry it's been like months. I don't know if I plan on going back to sticking to a schedule again, but I hoped you enjoyed this chapter! Until next time :o
