Banaras, 2021

The weather did not seem favourable. A storm could blow up at any moment! I paced up my steps, willing to reach my apartment soon which was not very far from here.

Today was such a hectic day! I had only two lessons off but there had been extra classes and I had to prepare the students of class twelve for the next week's debate competition. Given that I got zero time for writing today, I knew now I had to make up for it.

"Hi Ashi!" My next door neighbour, Swasti called as I was unlocking the door.

"Hello!" I smiled, "You returned so early today?"

"And you so late!"

"Extra classes, what else?" I shrugged, "Wanna have some coffee?"

"No no I have just had lunch! You go and take rest. See you later!"

Waving at her, I entered into my sweet abode. Everyday when I returned, the rooms used to look so different from what they did in the morning before I left for school. As if they also had missed me! Without my presence, there would be no light, no sound, not a single touch of life! Lonely life was so strange yet comfy.

I was a proud single. My parents lived in Bengaluru. They had shifted there after our original home in West Bengal had succumbed to the rising curse of global warming. I had shifted here after I got my job.

I never felt bad for being single. Love was not my cup of tea. Moreover, this aloneness was so perfect for my creative self that I never wanted to change it. Though my parents had been constantly sending me profiles of prospective grooms, I had been able to like none so far. None  seemed to be the one  I dreamt of. The one I was born for had not met me yet!

I opened my laptop, relaxing myself on the bed. This time of the day was my most favourite. Me and my manuscript, along with my favourite chocolate! Noting to distract me from my world of imagination! Bliss of being single!

I typed out around 1000 words before getting stuck on a particular scene. The infamous dice game of Mahabharat! My hands shivered even to imagine how I would pen down the scene where Draupadi was attempted disrobing!

Need a break before settling my mind for that! I took a deep breath and closed the laptop.

My eyes fell on the clock. Just 7 p.m. Will continue at the night.

My hand reached out for my phone. Other than my school and writing, this was the only thing I was addicted to. I had no relation with television. All the entertainment and necessity were fulfilled by this single device only.

There was nothing new in the news. More people had entered the time travel portal and shifted to different times as per their choices. The news channels were full with those stories. Traveling to different time had been so common now that it did not feel anything special to me anymore. Just like another social media trend.
