“Just come over here. Don’t worry, we can figure this out.”
“Okay,” Riley says weakly.
I press the off button on our home phone and then rush over to my mom, who is standing idly by the kitchen counter.
“Mom, this is really important. My friend Riley is coming over.”
“Riley? I’m not sure I know her.”
“She’s really nice, don’t worry. But this is super important.”
“Can you just tell me why?”
“Mom, I’m really sorry. I just need you to trust me. We’ll explain later.”
My mom has a very skeptical look on her face, but eventually agrees.
I quickly text Riley back.
U can come over. U know the intersection, Curtney and Apple St? Teleport there, and I will 2. I’ll teleport us 2 my room.
She replies quickly.
kk.
I quickly place my phone on my bed and close my eyes, imagining the fire hydrant on the corner and the house with the unkept yellow lawn.
Whoosh.
I open my eyes, and there I am, standing next to the traffic light pole. Riley appears on the opposite side of the intersection as me, and I wait as she crosses the crosswalks and runs up next to me.
“Ready?”
“Yeah.”
I touch her arm, and we teleport onto my bed.
“Nice room,” Riley says with a faint smile, although it's very forced. She looks as worried as she sounded on the phone.
“Thanks.” I look her in the eyes. “Don’t worry. We will figure this out. It’s fine. It will be fine.”
“I know… It’s just… What if my dad reports me to the government? I’ll be sent to some lab, and I’ll be forced to reveal you, and…”
“Riley! Stop!” I almost yell. “Stop “what-if ing.” Let’s just figure this out.”
She takes a deep breath and flops down on her back on my bed.
“Okay.”
“So… What exactly does your dad do? What government position?”
“All I know is that he does something to do with detective work and finding people. He tells us that he’s sworn to secrecy about every aspect of his work, so I don’t know much more.”
I frown, and raise an eyebrow. “Isn’t that a bit… Sketchy? How do you know your dad isn’t like a bounty hunter or something?”
“Trust me. My dad? A bounty hunter? No. But a secret agent… Yes, I can see that.”
“A secret agent? Really?” I almost crack a smile. But the serious look on her face suppresses it.
“I… I don’t know. That’s a pretty wild guess.”
“Yeah. But hey, we can teleport-- your dad being a secret agent isn’t too far fetched.”
This time we do smile.
“Alright, but to be serious… What should we do?” Riley asks, almost rhetorically.
“I don’t know.” I state. “I mean, we can’t run away or anything.”
Something flashes across her face with the words “run away,” but the look disappears quickly.
“Yeah. We can’t. But what happens if my dad reports us? Would government people come take us away?”
“That’s pretty extreme.”
“But we could be classified as… I don’t know. Inhuman or something.”
“Uh, I’m pretty sure we’re humans.”
“Well… You know!”
“Yeah.”
I sigh, and randomly check my phone, out of habit I suppose.
Suddenly, someone knocks on my door.
“Honey? Everything ok? Can I come in please?”
I look over at Riley, and she shrugs.
“Sure, Mom.”
She opens the door slowly, and then steps in.
“Hi, Riley, right?”
“Yeah. Riley James.”
“Nice to meet you. Girls, is something wrong? Can I help you with anything?”
Silence ensues for a minute.
To tell, or not to tell. That is the question. And unfortunately, a lot depends on my decision.
“Well… Ok. I’ll just tell you. But please don’t freak out.”
My mom’s eyebrows furrow. “Alright…”
I take a deep breath. “Mom, Riley can teleport too.”
My mom inhales sharply. “Really? You can too? Anyone else?”
“No, not that we know of,” Riley interjects.
I nod in agreement. “Yeah.”
“Wow. That’s a serious coincidence, with you two going to the same school and all.”
We both smile.
“So you believe me?” Riley asks.
“Well, yes. I mean, if my own daughter can teleport, I guess by some strange way there’s probably another.”
Riley smiles again.
“So anyways, Mom, we have a problem. Riley, maybe you should explain.”
Her smile vanishes. Clearing her throat, she starts talking. “Um… ok. So, my dad, he, uh… Works for the government. And we’re afraid that if he found out that we could teleport, he’d report us to, uh, someone. Someone in the government. Scientists, maybe. People that’d take us and study us. You know, that kind of stuff.”
“Well, does your dad know?” My mom asks with concern.
I grimace.
“That’s the problem,” Riley explains. “He does now. I teleported home from school, forgetting he’d be home early again. He saw me, he was standing right in front of me, when I appeared. He looked confused, but the revelation was clear in his eyes.”
“Oh no.” That’s all my mom can say.

I've been writing a lot on the next chapter of Element today! Perhaps I can publish that too. But proably not. Tomorrow. I'll do it tomorrow.
Ah, procrastination.
Well, sorry for this semi-long author's note. I'm off to go publish Riley's third chapter!
