I awaken to a soft tapping on my shoulder. Opening my eyes slowly, I see a silhouette standing beside my bed. I jolt up, suddenly very alert, and squint to make out who it could possibly be at this ungodly hour.

"What do you want?" I groan, just wanting to go back to sleep.

"Allegra, it's me, Riley."

"Riley? Wha-? What in the heck are you doing here?"

"Turn on a light. I'll explain."

I reach over to my nightstand and turn on my lamp. Sure enough, it's Riley, standing there, wearing sweats and a bulky backpack.

"Ok seriously. I didn't bring you to my room so you could teleport here in the middle of the night. What's going on?"

"It's bad. It's really bad," she whispers, and I can tell she's on the verge of crying.

"Calm down. Tell me everything."

She sniffs and inhales deeply before talking.

"I know what my dad does. He's a secret agent. I'm not even kidding. He really is."

My heart pounds. This is not helping our current situation.

Riley sets down her backpack and takes a seat on my bed. I scoot my legs over to make room for her. "Okay. Anything else I should know?"

"Well, he's not just a normal secret agent. He's a supernatural beings secret agent."

"You mean... He finds aliens? What?" I'm in disbelief.

"No. I mean, maybe... All I found evidence of is people with the powers of levitation and shape-shifting."

"Riley, please tell me you're joking. Levitation? Shape-shifting? Really?"

She shrugs and pulls a yellow folder out of the backpack. I open it and am met by a piece of stiff paper and a picture of a man resembling Riley taped to it.

Agent James

Supernatural Beings Division

Oh my god. She really was telling the truth. I flip through the file further and find a mission report on the man who could levitate things. It also mentions the shape-shifter. I almost feel light-headed from all this information.

Setting the folder down gently, I look up at Riley. She has a silent tear running down her cheek.

"So... What else? Is this all?"

"Did you see the email?" She asks quietly, not meeting my gaze.

"No..." I reopen the file and search through it all again. Shoved in the back is a piece of white paper with a bit of text printed on it. But it's obviously an email. I read it quickly.

Agent James,

I got your voicemail. Your daughter must be brought in for testing and lab examination. They seem to be popping up more and more these days don’t they. See you in the office.

General Rogers

Testing? Lab examination? This has turned into exactly what we didn't want it to. I restack the papers and place the folder in her backpack. Just as I'm about to zip it up, I see what all is in it. A few t-shirts, a jacket, another pair of shoes, and jeans. My eyes widen.

Oh my god.

She's running away.

"RILEY! What are you thinking?!" I say, a bit too loudly for 1:30 am.
