“What am I going to do?” I ask after Allegra’s mom walks away. I’m almost crying from the stress of everything.
“You don’t know what your Dad will do, right?” Allegra asks.
I nod.
“I think you should just go home and see what happens. You can always just teleport away if you’re in trouble. Or here. You can teleport to my room.”
“Ok.”
Allegra hands me a tissue. “Just, don’t do anything drastic.” She says nervously.
“Like what?”
“Oh I don’t know.” I think back to what she said earlier...
I mean, we can’t run away or anything.
No, it would not come to that.
“Well, see you later?” Allegra says.
“Hopefully.” I add under my breath. We embrace in a hug.
“Oh and maybe you should teleport a few blocks away this time.”
“That would probably be a good idea.” I say. We hug one more time, just because. I pull apart and close my eyes. I picture the abandon lot a couple blocks away from my house. It’s filled with trash and debris. I feel the wind blowing my hair into my face. I open my eyes; I’m standing in the lot. No one saw me. Good. I cannot handle another problem.
I take off full sprint towards my house. I stop right before I get to my street. My parents have probably already figured out I’ve been gone, but if I walk right through the front door I’ll have to make up some weird reason why I managed to leave the house without either of them seeing me. I’ll go through Emma’s house and say that I was there the whole time. I take a left and then a right and run onto Emma’s street. I walk through her front door. I do this all the time, she’s basically family. I see her dad.
“Hey Dan. Can I talk to Emma?”
“Sure, she’s in her room.”
“Thanks.” I walk down the hallway and into Emma’s room. She’s sitting on her bed reading a magazine. She looks up at me and opens her mouth to say something.
“Shoes.” I finish for her. “I’ve already taken mine off.” Emma is a total germaphobe and insists that everyone takes their shoes off before coming into her room.
“I have a bit of a problem” I say. Emma sits up straight, suddenly alert.
“What is it?”
“Well, my Dad may have seen me teleport.”
“What! Riley you literally just gave me a speech about how not to let your Dad find out like, two days ago.”
“I know.” I say.
“Well, what do you think he’s going to do?”
“Honestly? I have no clue. Emma, I have to go, but if my parents ask, can you tell them I was here after school?”
“Ok, bye.”
“See ya.”
I grab my shoes walk into her backyard. I can hear the jazz station playing softly inside my house. I open the creaky gate and walk by my Dad’s detached office. The door is slightly ajar. I can tell nobody's in there. I pause and decide to just go and have a peek. My curiosity is flaring, and maybe I can find out what my Dad really does.
I push open the door. The computer screen is glowing in the dark room. I walk over to the desk. There are files full of paper strewn across the desk. I pick one up and open it. There is a picture of my Dad paper clipped to it.
Agent James
Supernatural Beings Division
My eyes widen. What? I flip through it some more. I find what look like reports.
Operative: Allan James
In order to obtain information about Lawrence Reed (hereafter referred to as The Suspect) the Operative undertook a routine reconnaissance mission in The Subject’s bedroom.
The Suspect takes residence in 1258 Maple Lane. Investigation of The Suspects bedroom led to the discovery of a handwritten letter cited below:
Dear Lawrence,
If what you said was true, If the government is watching you, you have to run. Go somewhere remote. Your power to levitate sends off extreme magnetic waves. Use it as little as possible.
Abby Watson
Fingerprint analysis revealed that Abby Watson is a genetic scientist residing in Smalltown, Oklahoma. Known associates of Abby Watson: Billy Fletcher. Billy Fletcher has been accused of shapeshifting and is currently being held in government custody.
Trash can analysis uncovered travel brochures for Yosemite national park.
Levitate? Shapeshift? I look around on the computer screen and find an email open. It's from today, and sent by George Rogers. That’s my Dad’s boss, I’ve heard him talk about him before, briefly. The subject is “Teleport”. Not good. I read on with extreme concern.
Agent James,
I got your voicemail. Your daughter must be brought in for testing and lab examination. They seem to be popping up more and more these days don’t they. See you in the office.
General Rogers
Testing? Examination? That doesn’t sound good. At all. I take a moment to digest the information I've found.
My dad is in fact a secret agent. He works for a supernatural department. And I'm going to be brought in and, well, who knows what.
I print out the email, grab the files and walk out of the office, hoping nobody notices. I walk up the steps from my backyard into the family room.
“Riley! Where were you?” My mom asks, very worried.
“Oh, I was over at Emma’s house. I told you this morning I was gonna go over to her house after school.” I lie.
“You did? Huh. I don't remember...”
Dad probably hasn’t told her I can teleport yet.
“Where’s Dad?” I ask, hoping to veer away from my lie of my afterschool whereabouts.
“Oh he went to go play golf. Said something about clearing his mind and thinking things over. Here’s dinner.” She hands me a plate of pasta from beside the stove. Wow, dinner already? I look at the clock. It reads 6:00. I set the files down on the chair next to me and scarf down my dinner. I didn’t realize how hungry I was. I yawn.
“I’m gonna go to bed.”
“Already?” My Mom asks, slightly confused.
“I’m just really tired.”
“Ok,” My Mom says, frowning slightly. “Goodnight.”
“ ‘Night.”
“Love you.”
“Love you too."
I pick up the files and walk to my room. I empty my backpack and start packing. Now they know. The government knows.
Maybe Allegra can’t run away, but I can.
