Picture yourself on a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees,
and marmalade skies.
The Beatles were really tripping out when they wrote these lyrics. I sigh, but keep listening to the song.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds,
Lucy in the sky with diamonds…
The words blend with the numbers in my geometry homework, and I can’t focus. I turn off the song, and then refocus on the problem.
Find the angle measurements of x, y, and z.
Easy as pie. I do a few quick calculations and bam. Done with the worksheet. I flop back onto my bed. I’m extra tired today. It must be from a combination of school, swimming, dance, and teleporting. Yeah, teleporting takes up energy. The longer a distance I teleport, or the more things I bring with me, the more energy and effort it takes. I have to be careful with that, because if I don’t have enough energy to complete a teleport… Who knows what could happen?
Done with all my homework, I press play on my iPod Touch, and the Beatles resume their song. My eyelids flitter and flutter with the melodic music, and soon I am asleep.
Soft guitar strumming awakens me. I open my eyes, and slide to stop the alarm. Friday. It’s Friday. Yes! Filled with energy from my realization, I jump out of bed and put on my school uniform. I comb my wavy hair and put it in a high ponytail. My stomach growls, so I toast a bagel for breakfast.
As I’m chewing, my dad comes over.
“Have a good day, sweetie.”
“Wha-? Oh, bye Dad. Have a good day at work.”
“You too.”
“I’m not going to work,” I tease with a smile.
“You know what I mean.” He returns my smile, and hugs my little sister goodbye.
As the door closes, my mom walks into the kitchen, and immediately starts making coffee. I smile again. Some things never change.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning,” I reply. “You just missed Dad leaving.”
“Oh. Well, he leaves too early, anyways.”
I roll my eyes.
---
“Have a good day, girls.”
“Thanks!” We both say.
Kelsey mounts her bike, and I just grab my lunchbox and prepare to teleport.
“You’re so lucky, you know that, right?” My sister says/complains.
“I know. It’s really great.”
She rolls her eyes tiredly, and I smirk.
“Stop that, Allegra. Just go,” My mom says, irritated by our constant bickering.
“Sorry. Bye Mom!” Kelsey yells behind her as she pedals out of the driveway.
“Bye,” I say, and my mom just smiles in reply. I close my eyes, and picture the back of the building, with the paint chipping off and the dark green, leafy shrubs.
And here I am at school. People mill about, chatting with friends or looking at their phones. Nobody would even notice a girl randomly standing behind a classroom building. But as I turn to walk to my locker, I see someone staring right at me.
Not good.
She starts walking towards me with a look of wonder and curiosity. I want to walk away and avoid whatever problem this will cause, but she’s looking right at me, and I’m just staring awkwardly at her. It would be even more awkward if I walked away, so instead I just stay in place and let her come to me.
“Hi, um, you’re Allegra, right?”
The girl has dirty blonde, straight hair that she’s put into a ponytail. She has green eyes and fair skin, and is wearing running shoes. I know I’ve seen her before, but I don’t know her name, much less talked to her.
“Yeah, that’s me.”
“I’m Riley…” she trails off, and seems to be gathering her thoughts. “I… I just saw you-”
“Teleport?” The word slips out, and I resist the urge to cup my hand over my mouth.
Her eyes widen, and I can tell I just confirmed her suspicions.
“Yes. I just saw you teleport here.”
“Look, please don’t… just don’t tell anyone. I don’t want this to be a big deal, I don’t-”
“But I can too.”
I stop talking, and my breath catches in my throat.
“I’m sorry… What did you say?”
“I said, I can too. I can teleport.”
We stand, looking at each other, not moving. Is she joking? How could she possibly be able to teleport also? I guess the ability to teleport in the first place is just as rare as finding someone else who can also.
“Do you believe me?” Riley asks quietly.
“I don’t believe everything I hear,” I state, still searching her face for signs of bluffery.
“I can prove it to you. If you will also.”
I smile slowly. “Alright. We’ll both teleport to the grove, near the back most tables.”
“Let’s go!”
I watch her as she closes her eyes, and then I do the same.
I hesitate for a moment, my eyes still closed. Why am I trusting her? Why should I listen to, even reveal my deepest secret to, someone I just met three minutes ago? But my gut tells me to just go with it, to trust her.
I think about the sticky green tables, and the four big redwoods.
I appear next to the table I always eat lunch at. Just as I open my eyes, I witness Riley materialize on top of the table right next to me.
My heart pounds. Wow. She’s right. She really can teleport.
She opens her eyes, and then blushes as she notices herself standing on the table. She quickly hops down, and then smiles at me.
“See?”
“I’m convinced.” I smile back, and a warm feeling rushes up inside me. My secret’s out to the first person outside of my immediate family, but we share something much more important than just going to the same school. I guess I’m not alone with my fantastic ability.
