JUNGKOOK
In the distance, the sun rises above the snow. I feel dry - my insides feel dry. The night practically froze me as I watched Jimin sleep the whole time. My neck feels stiff - hell, everything feels stiff from the cold and the metal.
It's abuse.
We only started heading into the forest an hour or so ago, away from the snowy plain we were going on initially.
I gently squeeze Jimin's hand.
"Wake up," I croak, the cold stealing my voice. He stirs and his right hand goes to rub at his eyes before he leaves my side and sits up straight. He registers the daylight before stretching his arms and looking at me.
"We can't do this," he whispers and I furrow my brows before laughing.
"Do what? You think we have a choice? Jimin, we are in a cage!" I say incredulously, not really sure what he's talking about myself.
"He's going to have to stop for the horses soon and then there will be no more breaks. We have to do something," Jimin insists quietly so as to not be overheard. He slowly inches over to the lock across us and runs his fingertips over the hole where the key is inserted.
"Are you insane? We don't know how to pick that! And where do we go from there? If we do make it out?" I challenge. He looks at me, the wildest look in his eyes.
"I don't know but I'm not going to sit here and wait to be taken back," he says firmly.
"Do you have a pin?" I ask but he's already retrieving one. I don't even ask.
JIMIN
I feel a bit dazed - I have just woken up after all. But sleep has run its course and I can actually think straight now. I fumble a bit with the lock as I try to remember how this works.
I'd be lying if I said I could easily do this.
As a matter of fact, I've never done this before but plenty of books have mentioned this and there is no other option.
I can feel Jungkook burning holes through me with that questioning look of his and I try not to let that bother me as I move the pin about in the hole.
In a few minutes, the lock snaps open and I think I might cry from relief.
"Now what?" Jungkook asks nervously as I remove the lock and hold the handle of the door so it doesn't just swing open. I look around me and all I see is snowy forest and what I'm sure is a confusing maze of trees.
"We really have to go," I mumble and look at Jungkook. A new fire and will burn in me. If Mi Cha wants to stop me, she can, but I'm not going down without trying. I have to try.
"You get out first," I nod to Jungkook and I swear he grows paler and tries to scoot back.
"How?" he asks, voice suddenly raspy. I look out at the bumpy snowy ground and look back at him.
"You just have to try. Don't look back, just run," I say and he wets his lips.
"And what about yo-"
"Trust me," I say seriously, swallowing the lump in my throat. He nods slowly and crawls up to the door, ready for me to open it. My heart thrums against my ribcage. I touch his hand and he looks at me in surprise. I crack a smile.
"Oh, and, try to not be so loud," I tease quietly before holding the door open.
JUNGKOOK
I can feel every rock this carriage runs over and for some reason, I worry that I might be the next rock - whatever that's supposed to mean. I'm just nervous - who wouldn't be?
I take a last look at Jimin - no, I will see him again. He will jump out right after me. He will.
He takes his hand off mine.
And then I roll off on my side.
The ground hits my shoulder and sends pain up it but I can't stop to think. The clattering of hooves is already leaving me and I try to not groan as I push my palm against the rough ground to get up.
And I run for it.
I trust Jimin, and if he says he will be right behind me, I will not waste time looking.
