Queens, 2023. The light of summer flooded through the windows . A night of - totally platonic - singing, dancing and eventually sleeping flooded your mind as Peter shook you awake.
"We're late!" Peter's morning voice was raspy after humming along to your singing until around 3am before falling asleep in each other's arms. Your eyes squint with confusion before shooting open and propping yourself up on her elbows in panic.
"It's Monday!" you exclaim. The first day back at school for senior year. Peter had already slung yours and his backpack over either shoulder before grasping your hand and dragging you out of the door. You could tell Peter was trying to slow himself down to keep to your pace as you were running down the street, but he didn't let go of your hand. As they both burst through the gates of the school and through the doors of their first class of the day, Peter attempted to hide the fact he was still wearing the same clothes as he was the day before.
"Hey Y/n, what did your Mum make for your lunch today, eh? Oh wait, you don't have a mum do you?" Flash choked at his own joke but, as far as everyone knew, you didn't have a mother. You didn't have a father either. At least that what was everyone has assumed. No one had ever asked you, not even Peter. They had all guessed you was kicked out, left to the streets, or had mysteriously rolled up one day from an English boarding school with a scholarship in one hand and a school bag in the other. Of course you had actually done that last one. It was clear to say that Y/n Potts was not the stereotypical girl you would find at Midtown high school. Not the stereotypical girl you would find in Queens for that matter. Maybe that's why Peter was so drawn to you.
You sat beside each other that first lesson. Mumbles of what had happened the night before lingering in the air between you. The sunset you had adored, the music you had danced to, the chocolate ice cream you had dropped that was staining the couch as they spoke. The only thing that was not brought up was how you had ended up in the same bed, intermingled in each other's arms. Peter had stayed round many times before, he practically lived there throughout the summer, but he had always made his way to the couch. Perhaps it was the nostalgia of the oncoming school year that forced you into each others arms, or maybe it was that look he had give you, as you were sat on the fire escape looking towards the falling sun. The look that made it seem as though the whole universe sat in your eyes, yearning to be explored.
"Right class, today we are learning about electromagnetism. Please partner up, we are doing a practical experiment." Miss Cravis belted from the front of the classroom. You snapped out of your reminiscent day dream and focused on the board. Electromagnetism and its fields printed big and bold on the worksheet that was being handed out.
"Magnets, seriously?" you thought to yourself, "Like I would need to know any more about magnets." You scoffed as you thought and a confused Peter quickly glimpsed at you. "I just wanted to start the year off on something a bit more interesting, that's all." You said out loud this time, panicking that Peter had somehow heard what you had originally thought.
"Okay class, so I am handing out a copper wire and an electromagnet. Using the right hand rule and a compass, I would like you to determine the direction of the current. All the instructions are on your worksheet. You have 5 minutes." Your eyes dart down to the piece of paper that sat in front of you.
You read step 3, "Hold the magnet in your right hand. The direction your thumb goes in is the direction of the current.". You read it again. "Hold the magnet in your right hand". And again. "Hold the magnet". The room began to spin. Your shaking palms began to sweat as you uncomfortably shift in your seat.
"What's wrong? Y/n, are you okay?" Peter places his hands on your back and tries to look into your eyes, but they were engraved onto step 3 and couldn't be shifted. "Y/n, let me take you to the nurses office." You are completely paralysed, frozen to the spot. The magnet that had been placed on the table started to drift towards you.
"What's happening? What are you doing?" Your eyes are still empty, emotionless, frozen. Your whole body began uncontrollably tremble as the magnet gained speed, slid across the table, and shot into your arm. Your eyes suddenly refill with life as you stumbled out of your chair and stared at the piece of metal that had attached itself to your. You whimper in pain, holding your forearm as the magnet crawled into you, turning electric blue before being concealed by your skin. Your breath heavy with agony, the eyes of the classroom fall upon you. Before anyone could mock you, you sprint out of the room and down the empty hallway.
