A half hour later Jaylyn stood with Detective Martinez as they watched Henry walk around the crime scene that had taken place in a small side road right out side the child’s house. Talking to the neighbors hadn’t been helpful, all of them had claimed not to have seen or heard anything, and the parents had been out of the house at the time, which after checking the cameras at the store, proved to be the truth. Whoever had killed the child had also been sure to wipe the blade of fingerprints and hadn’t left any traces of their DNA in the house near the broken window.

“I bet he solves this in a week.” Jaylyn told Jo.

“I bet… four days, at most.”

Henry came back over to them with a grin on his face. “The killer did leave something behind, footprints.”

            “What size?” Jo asked.

“Men’s size ten.” He led them over to where he had found the prints but backed Jaylyn away while Jo investigated. “I know who it was.”

Jaylyn was about to ask whom the killer was, let alone how he had figured it out so soon, when he slipped a paper into her hand and turned away to talk with Jo, she looked down at the small piece of paper and unfolded it.

You never let me finish so don’t get mad at me that I had to resort to this method of communicating. Someone knows about the curse. Someone who doesn’t have it, they saw me return in an alley and escaped before I could track them down. Watch the shadows, someone out there knows about us, they saw my face and they heard your name when I called out to them momentarily thinking it was you. Something tells me we are about to have problems in our future because of this.

The bottom of the letter was initialed JR, Jack Ripper, Jaylyn crumpled the paper up and put it in her pocket. Henry glanced at her as he noticed the movement and she shook her head, she would have to tell him later when Jo wasn’t around to ask questions. Jack was an idiot, how could he have let himself get caught coming back, sure he wouldn’t have known a person was walking by, but that didn’t mean he had to put both of them in danger. Knowledge was power and now the person who had seen him held the power over them to ether tell someone, which could risk them being questioned on the matter, or keeping quiet and leaving them in paranoia.

Detective Martinez stood up and walked over to the car they’d ridden in. “Come on we need to get back to see if Lucas has found anything else on the body.”

“Shouldn’t we recheck the break in site?” Jaylyn asked.

“Another team was here earlier today to look at that with Hanson.”

“Let me guess, they found absolutely nothing.”

“Yep.” Jo replied as she drove back to the police department.

Lucas looked up at them as they came out of the elevator. “Guys I found some thing else on the body!”

“What is it?” Henry quickly went to his assistant’s side to look down at the child’s body.

“Uh, well when I was cutting open the head I found a burn mark on the inside of the skull, after shaving the outside part, well look for yourself.” Lucas tilted the victim’s head to the side as they all gathered around.

“This was done a few days prior to death.” Henry analyzed. “This was made by something striking the skull with a high voltage… It is rather surprising this didn’t cause the death but might explain the lack of sound heard by the child when he was murdered.”
