A good story can stand on its own.In writing Classics, it is only natural that the world you are trying to build up is full of its own complicated structure and formations and so it is only better to have all these completed in a single book and to have everything laid out for the reader to imagine from the beginning ‘til the end. No matter how many parts your book has, you should remember than whichever part that reader wants to start reading, they can still figure out what story are you trying to convey.
Although, this doesn’t really apply to all genre since there are lots of stories that has continuous plots but divided in several books and that means you really have to start reading from the beginning. But in Classics, you are trying to write the world that contains ancientness. The unique features of before to the people of now. The things that mostly people are unaware or rather, unfamiliar of. So, you shouldn’t confuse them by lacking at the descriptions of what you want to show them.
I have read a book before and it was actually cool. At the very beginning, I was already aware that that part was the first one and there are succeeding parts (one or two, maybe). I liked the story because it was unique, very well-written, and of course, I like the genre so I was totally hooked and read it faster than usual. But then, at the end part, there were lots of things that happened and although I have known the story since the beginning, I have been left out of what happened at the end. A lot of additional elements were added at the last minute and almost all of them are strange to me. I was clueless until I finished reading.
I think this is the perks of stories with additional parts or serialized. That is actually one way to effectively capture the interest of the readers to read more and to check out the part twos of the book but my suggestion is that, do not overdo it. Do not violate the rules that you created in your world nor create elements without explaining it to the readers because it will only confuse them and in some aspects, you’ll only displease your readers.
So make your story independently standing on its own. In that case, it won’t have to depend on other works just to realize the imagination you want to carve in your audience’s minds.
